Looking for James Ramsay info/records

My Uncle James, James English Ramsay, was born in Greenock 7/1/1924. He was in the Merchant Navy during the war and I think went to Archangel. According to my Mum, his sister, he may have lied to join up probably in Greenock. He was supposed to have been torpedoed?
Are there any official/unofficial records? Just looking to preserve something about him for the family tree.

Could this be his Seamans Pouch,i am almost certain itmay be even though the day of Birth is the 1st and not the 7th!
Human error could have been made!

There was a James Ramsay aged 19 with 6 months service signed on the Dutch “Hilversum” as Sailors Boy in Greenock 3rd March 1943, the ship arrived in New York 28th March 1943 having sailed from Gourock via Halifax N.S. she sailed again for high Seas 10th April 1943

The same James Ramsay was still signed on when the ship “Hilversum” arrived again in New York 17th May 1943 having sailed from La Romana Santa Domingo she sailed again 19th May 1943 for the UK via Boston, it would appear that when the ship sailed J Ramsay was left in hospital in New York.

not sure if this is the same J Ramsay who signed before she sailed the Dutch “Alpherat” in New York when she arrived 13th August 1943 she sailed again fro High seas 27th August 1943

Thanks Ray. The age sounds right. I will ask my Mum if he was in hospital in NY.

Doc Vernon has found his pouch at the National Archives so I will check the information.
