Default Hello - new ex-Bibby Line member

    Hi There

I worked (briefly!) for Bibby's about 76 - 82, as a engineer cadet and junior, before getting paid off.

My dad was a second in Bibby's for years too, many will remember Bill Hay.

I'd love to hear from anyone who remembers me or him!

As I said in an earlier post I joined Bibbys in 1960 and worked for them on and off for 16 years having left the Company twice mainly to gain experience on the Passneger Liners of Cunard and P & O. For one reason or another they took be back on both occasions, so I guess I must have been doing something right. Sailed on just about every type of the ship the company operated from troopship to OBO's. The only exception being the gas carriers. Left them in 1976 to work for Townsend Thoreson and then went back to Cunard. I see you live on the Isle of Man - whereabout are you. I lived on the Island for 26 years, mainly in Douglas and then Port Erin. Now live on the banks of Loch Lomond just outside the village of Gartocharn.

    Regards,
    John

    Default the Island

    Hi John

We live in Andreas, 'down north' as they say here. Been on the island almost 9 years, came here to get away from the hassles and stress of the UK (so why do I work with young offenders....???!!!) , didn't need a work permit as my Dad's second wife was Manx.

We had been visiting for 20 years for TT so knew the island well before we came. Love life here, wild horses wouldn't drag us back to the UK!

Funnily enough, Nigel Malpass ('bypass') ex master in Bibby's lives in Ramsey, and is currently Chair of the Comissioners! I haven't looked him up as we didn't exactly get on.....let sleeping dogs lie I think.

I sailed on bulkers, general cargo and gas wagons, and should have been on the Derby when she sank, I was obviously meant to achieve something else with my life. maybe that's why I work with those young offenders!

    best regards

    Neil

    Hi Neil

Good to hear from you and glad to to hear that you are enjoying living on the Isle of Man. My daughter lives at Governors Hill with her husband and family. You may know her Husband, Colin Kirkham. He was in the Manx Police for a while and is now in the Fire Service based in Douglas. Know what you mean about N.M.
I knew him when he was a Deck Cadet. Take care and all the best for the festive season.

    Regards
    John

PS I knew of your Dad but never had the pleasure of meeting him as our paths never crossed. Did you ever sail with John Oates, Purser. He lives in Onchan, Nursery Avenue to be exact.

    Hello Neil
Although we are in touch via e-mail, just thought I'd pop up here and welcome you to the merry band.
There seems to be more going on here about Bibby's than on Ships Nostalgia so I must check it more often.
I see you are over here as well John C!
Nigel Malpass was mentioned, I sailed with him when he was 4/O or 3/O on Coventry City back in 1967, Didn,t he end up as one of the management team for Bibby's?
Anyway, I'm off to catch up with the rest of the threads on here so
    Best Wishes
    Alan

Default Small world - well, small island!

John, I don't know your son in law Colin, but my boss (Sergeant Bob Quayle) does!

Even more odd, my Dad's second wife (re married in later life) was born in Nursery Avenue! I didn't sail with John Oates, the only Pursers I recall were Bob Grey ('the screaming skull') and Terry someone, a tall thin bloke.

Alan, thanks again, it's great to hear from you after all these years.

NM did end up in management, and I think he has a small ship management company of his own here, with which he was involved in some controversy earlier this year - I shan't go into that as it wasn't proven, but his name was all over the papers for a few days, that's how I got to know he was here!

    Best regards

    Neil
