JIm Cockburn and I were junior 6ths. Mr Swan was no 1 frig. Brian (geordie) and a Belfast lad were the other frig engs.Mr Leach was chief officer, Bernie Youens (West Ham fan) was an apprentice officer. Tony a Londoner was chief 'lecky, also Bob Hamilton and Paul Marshall were 2nd 'leckies.
Any of these guys still out there, or anybody else who was on the ship in '62 & 63?
I did 5 beef runs to BA and Montevideo, remember seeing bits of the Graf Spee lying about on the quayside at Montevideo, or was that a myth?

I was deckboy on her for nearly 6 months early 66. Went down to Hobart , Beauty point, Fremantle for repairs after a storm in the bight. Then onto Hamburg and paid off in Hull just after the 66 seamans strike. She was on charter to shaw swivels and was my worst trip.

    Default Hornby Grange

I was 5th Engineer on the Hornby Grange in Sept 63, Willie Lyle was 2nd by then, both Willie and I were on the 4/8 watch, many a good night had down in Argentina and Montivadio, I remember most of the names you mentioned, 3rd Engineer we nicknamed the Gilly Gilly man as he was always shaking his money box wanting to play cards, after leaving the Hornby I went to the Orelia,we did the run to various ports for iron ore, left in 66 and went to New Zealand to work with Union Steam Ship Company of NZ.

I think we sailed together on Hornby Grange in 1962 as J eng's for a couple of voyages to BA etc . the other J eng was a red headed Irishman by the name of Dave Grainger.( he defected to fridge engineer on first return leg )
It was sure a bad experience for me with that 2 eng midget Dickensen who made every effort to make life hell on board for me. Thank God I had the common sense to move on to NZ Shipping Company serving on Durham and later the Hinakura.
From there I permanently relocated to live in NZ . I operated my own small engineering business for many years before deciding to sell up and seek more
opportunities in Australia. After 17 years in Sydney I moved the business up here to Brisbane in 2011.

Following an engineering apprenticeship at Doxfords in Sunderland, I joined the Merchant Navy as a 20 year old. For my first trip I joined the Hornby Grange at Liverpool in 1950 as Assistant Engineer C for what was supposed to be a routine trip of 2 months to Buenos Aires for a cargo of meat returning to the UK for Christmas - however, the trip turned out to be highly eventful and lasted 9 months. Would anyone be interested in hearing any more? And is there anyone who was also on this trip or can remember the voyage mentioned? I can remember the following names:

    Captain - Mr Bearpark
Chief Engineer - Mr Jones (a Welshman)
Senior Second Engineer - Mr Brodie (a Scot)
Junior Second Engineer - John Harland Coates from Sunderland
Senior Third - Mr Horrabin from Newcastle
    Junior Third - Mr Carpenter
Fourth - Paddy ? (Northern irish)
    Sixth - Jock McLean (Scottish)
Assistant B - Jock Cunny (Scottish)
Assistant C - Myself (Peter Sutton, Sunderland)
Chief electrician - Jerry Roach (Liverpool)
Chief refrigeration engineer - Mr Braithwaite
    Wireless operator - Mr Pennington

Belfast lad Dave was already a fridge engr when I Joined in August 62, Ron. We nicknamed him youngest 2nd Fridge in the world, he always told us how young he was for his position. Mr Swan was chief fridge.

Mike I have just come across Ships Nostalgia and your post. I am the Electrician Tony (Salmons) referred to in your post. I was second lecky for a couple of trips on the Hornby Grange and then went first. Chief Engineer Jones was a grumpy old character.but I got on OK with the Second Dickinson. The Thirds were great. Willy Lyle from Glasgow, John White from the Isle of Wight and Andy from Ayr in Scotland.
I wonder if you were on the trip to BA when President Frondizi gave the vote to the Peronistas and the unions shut down the BA power station putting the whole city into darkness. Needless to say the girly bars carried on regardless by candlelight.. Then we heard the Argentine navy cruiser the was heading up the Plate to shell the power station!, The old Hornby Grange was alongside not far from the power station so there were frantic calls for pilots to move ship but they were on strike as well!
Nothing came of it . It all petered out and I think the army deposed Frondizi Its hard to think this is over 50 years ago.
I worked for a few outfits Clan Line, Federal Line and MacAndrews and of course Houlders. Food was the best with Houlders and the worst with Clan Cheers Tony Salmons.

Hi mike, just picked this up, I was an assistant steward on her ,did two trips ,joined her in Barry in December 1961, till may 1962,I seem to remember the ship being shot at in one of the ports when we were alongside, the chief steward was a Mr Brown, nice old boy,I was told off by the chief officer for being (as he put it) on the quarter deck, socialising with the deck cadets, who were a similar age to me, happy days, Regards Joe
