    Shipmates,

Irene phoned this evening (Oz Time) to give me the latest news re Vernons progress. I was surprised and disappointed to learn that he is still in the ICU at Westmead Hospital. Apparently, the optimistic expectations of last week may have been a little premature and from what Irene described I got the impression that they won't allow Vernon to go home just yet. Irene's is most concerned that he has lost his appetite. As much as the family try, he just won't eat anything. Tomorrow, his daughter, Cheryl, is going to try and tempt him with a Macca's Cheeseburger(one of his favourites!). Blimey, it must be serious! but if that's what it takes why not ? In truth, he has lost 6 kilos since his admission to Penrith Hospital two weeks ago, and personally I can't see the doctor's discharging him until he gets some of his strength back. Irene said the nurses have him sitting up in bed and they take him for the occasional walk. Most of the time he is alert and aware of all that is going on around him, but is '' not as chirpy as usual" (her words). Although in some discomfort (to be expected I guess) the doctors have been giving him some pain-killers. The way Irene described it to me it sounded as if one of the magic pills might be opium-based, but, surely, that wouldn't be right, would it? Furthermore, she said there's been two occasions when he appeared to be hallucinating. Strewth ! if they are dosing him up on magic mushrooms he may not be in a hurry to go home just yet anyway.......(only joking, folks).

Originally, it was my intention to visit Vernon at Westmead sometime this week, but now will probably wait until he is out of Intensive Care or discharged. Irene has kindly agreed to furnish me with a frequent update so that I can pass it on. Next time I hope the news is more positive.

Many thanks for the update on Vernon, Roger.
It is very worrying that he is not recovering as he should be.

    Roger,
This is very worrying. I just opened my PC. I do not drive very far but certainly can to Blackheath. I do not want to interfere at this stressful time, but if there anything you feel I can do for Irene just let me know.
