Three cruise ships in Port Melbourne yesterday staying overnight so the bloods could go to the Melbourne Cup.
Talking with a guy in the docks that I know he told me there were 40 coach loads each of 60 went to the cup, the cost to each person for the day trip, $300.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

Don't do much Horse Racing Bets ,but once a Year have a go at the Melbourne Cup!
Have been quite Lucky mind you,and have had several Winners in the past!
Funnily most were from dreams I had !

Yes it was so sad to hear of the two Horses dying, one Put down and the other just from I suppose too much hard Running!

As said I don't do much on the Gee Gees but really think that it is sometimes rather a bit crual in some ways!
I know they are Bred to Race etc,but from Years ago its always been just the Money for the People.
Well tahts just my thoughts !
    Cheers

    Hi kevin.
Haven't been on the USS page for awhile.
I was on the Konini around Xmas 62. Then again from Jan 63 to Oct 63 I remember Joe and Hori Briggs on the coast but can't remember if they were on the Konini the same time as me, When were you on her.
    Cheers Des

Help me out here. I wrote in a post for Jim that Les had been on the NZ coast, I'm sure he had posted on this USS forum, or maybe some other one but I can't find it. I had his name wrong when I posted it was an honest mistake, can you remmeber him posting.
I think I was on the Waipori with Ronnie Hines.
Another story about big Yorky was that he went into a shop in Auckland, picked up an outboard motor hoisted it on his shoulder, as he walked out the door, {no payment] one of the shop assistants said going fishing on the weekend? Yep said Yorky and dissapeared down Queens St.
Another thing that was done by blokes off the coast. They got all the big pot plants out of the foyer of the Great Northern and lined them up across Queens St, stopped the traffic for quite awhile if I remember.
Jim . remember the ring bolts that used to go across the Tasman on the Monowi, And wasn't it the Monowai that Ronnie Jorgason killed that steward and dived over the side and swam for sugar refinary.
A good book to read "Denizens of the Deep" I think it 's called , written by Gerry Evans, who ended up as President of the NZ seamens union, the book more or less describes the end of the seamens union as we knew it. He later was a walking deligate with Davie harkness on the Auckland wharfs, he went back to sea on the Golden Bay the cement boat, remember her Jim? I see her come into Portland nearly every Sunday, though she is the new ship
    Cheers Des
Des. From Kev Price , wasn't it Jorgenson and Gillies that went into a Beer house in Bassett Road Auckland, and machine gunned down, Kenny Speight who was a
messman on the coast. This book by Gerry evans Denizens of the deep, can I get hold of it somewhere. Cheers Taff

    Hi Kevin.
I think I got the book by Gerry Evans from the Library in Whangarie North Island when we went over there to live in 2000 spent four years there then came back to Aus. Haven't seen a copy over here.
