Can remember seeing the Reina Del Mar on her way to the scrap yard whilst on my first trip in 1975.
Where was she broken up?

Reina Del Mar ran for PSNCo for only eight years before being withdrawn from the South American run in March 1964. She was sent back after her builders Harland & Wolff in Belfast , for conversion into a two-class cruise ship with 1047 passengers. She was chartered to the Travel savings Association, which was jointly owned by Union-Castle Line, Canadian Pacific, Royal Mail Lines, and the founder, Max Wilson. Reina Del Mar reappeared in June 1964 with the black TSA logo on a yellow funnel, and was managed by Union-Castle, who then took full ownership of TSA in October 1964. In November, she was converted into a one class ship with 1026 berths, although capacity was restricted to 998, and was repainted in full Union-Castle colours. She was the only Union-Castle cruise ship. In 1969 she was transferred within the Furness Withy Group to Royal Mail Lines, but chartered back to Union-Castle. In 1973 she was sold back to the Union-Castle Line. Reina Del Mar was withdrawn in 1975 and sold to Taiwanese breakers, arriving on July 30th. Demolition was completed on December 10th 1975.((by Tung Cheng Steel Manufacturing Co,Kaohsiung,Taiwan).

Hi Gulliver,

Many thanks for the information regarding the above vessel. Yes it was this ship which I saw going to the breakers, as at the time we were in the Indian Ocean on our way to Japan. Actually spoke to the ship via VHF, skeleton crew and slow steaming. A great pity to see vessels like her no longer required. Pity we no longer build vessels as such in the UK any more... Bibby's having a second type 53 bulker built in China.

Built 1966 Cargo /Reefer 21 kts. 12,141Tonnes dwt.
Jumboised 1975 to 16,278 tonnes dwt ,with extra heavy lift derrick,and capacity for 200 TEU’s.
Remained with Safmarine all her life.
Broken Up Kaohsiung,Taiwan 27.9.84

Hi All, Just stumbled across this site while looking for something else. My father served on the Reeina del Mar and I still have loads of pictures somewhere. He was a Master at Arms and I rememebr him telling me about when Castro's guys came aboard. I have a photo of him somewhere with a few of them.
He passed away twenty years ago now but it would be interesting if anyone served with him.

(reason I was looking is because i saw a desk calendar on ebay for sale with a Reina del Mar logo on but the seller gave the history as some other ship so I thought Id just check!)

Anyway, feel free to contact me, would be awesome if any one actually rememebered him!
