Bryan , that is an excellent shot of a ship that was, and looked the part of a fast cargo/mail carrying passenger liner. When the U.K had and needed such. Alas containerisation was just over the horizon. Also the advent of cheaper built ships from Japan. She was the epitome of everything that U.K.
ship builders could and did in that era. Probably it is just nostalgia on my part, but I look at snaps like that give a sigh and think what happened ???
We went from being a major maritime power ship owners and designer/builders etc. To what we are now, which is just another flag of convenience nation.

Good Hope and Southampton Castle were the two most powerful motors ships in the world at one time.

Curiously she has her gear flying at number four.
I wonder if this was a quick dash around the land or in fact captured to/from Assie or St Helena? I think they were the only two places that these two ships actually used their own gear; in their case for discharging into lighters as there was no alongside berths.

Her gear seems that be plumbed over the off side if not just swung out of the way for a quayside discharge ? JS

Oi tink he was referring to photo#1 and not #4. It was common practice to voyage with derricks flying when coasting looks like she is en-route to collect last consignment, as we always battened down those hatches completed
