Both ships were twin screws driven by two sulzer oil engines.
On each ship one engine was built by Barclay Curle Ltd. Glasgow whilst the other was built by Wallsend Slipway and Engineering.
There was a rumour going about when I was with B&C that ships had to carry two sets of engine spares as was one engine was imperial and the other metric.

This picture would have been taken by someone aboard her sister ship. Every voyage they passed each other between Ascension and St Helena. At each of the islands cargo and mail was unloaded onto barges. No time to waste so the derricks remain rigged for the passage. On a more lengthy passage the derricks were stowed vertically as there were not needed at any port in South Africa or Southampton.
The two ships passing each other had a closing speed of about 48 knots. It was very impressive ! I had the pleasure of sailing as second officer on both of them.
