    hi john sabourn #28
good evening, i dont think i ever met andrew whelan, but one would never know for sure as in bootle it would be considered to be a original dormitory town for the irish whom dug the canals railways and the mersey tunnel etc etc, and therefore most of the population in bootle that was irish, was related in some way or other directly or indirectly to each other as families where by in large catholics to my side and you know how ( inbreeding turns out,) but the name whelan of which i can remember a couple back in school days, and they originated in waterford or kilkenny, but as for now in my old town all the old irish families have died off, and its not the same no more.
as you wrote maybe the whelan you remember may be still active and might get in touch, it would be interesting to hear if he can add to the history that we now know about the altmark,
    tom

I was a telephonist on Pendennis Castle, her maiden voyage. Three young women, green as grass!. In particular I remember trying to smuggle a stray kitten on board which we found on the dock in Cape Town. Unsuccessful, probably just as well especially for the cat! I do also recall we often took dogs, presumably along with owners who were moving to Sth Africa, dogs were kept in a special area on an upper deck and we would go up there and 'talk' to them. don't think we were allowed to actually touch them.

#10 Although not so celebrusious a funnel on the Sunprincess an ex war time liberty ship was done out as the flag locker I added my touches to it by adding a couple of old easy chairs and a table , but the funnel wasn’t too far from the passenger bar on the monkey Island and if ever wanted peace and quite used to invite one of the passengers to admire the flags hoping they would bring the drinks with them . We used to carry horses at times but they were kept in stables on deck. Cheers JS

Joined a ship in KG5 think it was the Cretic to work by, opened the door of the cabin I was given the stink was terrible. They had been down to BA the previous trip and the guy in the cabin before had bought a parrot and under the bunk was piled with parrot ****e.
Got another cabin, I was only on it a couple of days before getting sent up to Liverpool to join the Icenic..
Have seen service dogs on a cruise, had a fenced off patch of artificial grass for them to go on.
    Regards Michael
