thanks for all the feedback - and topics not related - i smoked for years and then when my better half wanted to give it up - i gave up and have not touched a ciggie for nigh on 16 years - re the scoops - i seem to recall the " posh " brigade - and remember reading about the punkah louvres being used on the suez route from uk to australia ?

One such port was open, some smart a had opened it for some unknown reason.
But we were coming into the bay and it got a bit rough.
No need to sugi the cabin deck on that occasion but it took some cleaning up we were told.

#1 Those white painted blobs which we once called rivet heads look very much like the present new affliction on mankind whether humanly manufactured in a laboratory or on the persons of the areas remains to be seen , but mankind at present has decided to call them monkey pox. So maybe the vessel showing such may have to go into quarantine at its next port of call. ? The Punkah louvres so called were either stiff cardboard or converted biscuit tins to anyone of such integrity to make it possible , mind I speak for the poorer relations on the trampships who signed on with no idea where they would finish up , and worked on the assumption that after the first 12 months you were over the hump and it was all down hill thereafter . Cheers JS

Hi. bryan We used to call them air vents or scuttles. I was on my bunk once and a flying fish hit the scuttle and landed on my chest. No one,no one ever got out of his bunk quicker than I did. I believe it was a union castle ship. Maybe Union Castle.

Easy for him with his nicotine stained fingers almost black from smoking.

    Hi John
I worked at Lewisham Hospital for 26yrs.
Throughout this time most of the elder consultants smoked in and around the hospital.
Now its not allowed within the buildings or the grounds, but you still see them puffing away quite merrily outside the grounds come rain or shine. Those of them that are left that is.

We had them on the Cadet training ship Otaio. Made of either plastic or fibre glass, can't quite remember!, but being generally an uncouth lot we just called them "**** chutes" On more than one occasion where someone had upset the gang for one reason or another, one of the deck washdown crew was dispatched to the cabin of the person concerned and their **** chute was turned to point skyward resulting in a deluge of dirty water flooding the cabin. Not great if you had one of the cabins with a bunk under said port!

Well Mick, what a surprise to find you on here.
Good to see you, but now I am in trouble as you know all about me and the ladies in Cape Town and other adventures we had.
Mick, suggest we keep it to our selves. LOL
    Happy daze John in Oz.
