Capstan full strength was one of my favorites.
But in Las Palmas a silver salver could get you 200 Chesterfields, very easy as some of the traders were allowed on board.
800 at a time I would get some for silver some in exchange for British fags. 200 Woodbines would get me 400 Chesterfields.

Came ashore and found the price outrageous for a pack of 20, about 2/6 a pack.

Met my wife who only smoked tipped ones, converted me to them, but in 1972 I got the Flu, only time ever.
Went off smokes and never looked back.

I used to roll my own at one time , Capstan and Justmans mixed , even at one time rolled in liquorice papers .JS
Even at 16 my mother wanted a posed picture of me with arms crossed , my fingers even at an Early age were black with nicotine. I was a member of the SSS at school , standing for Secret Smoking Society . JS

Into Lewisham Hospital for a Hernia op.
The surgeon came to see me the night before the op.
Asked if I smoked and if so to give it up as it was not good for me.
Easy for him with his nicotine stained fingers almost black from smoking.

My mother always said that if you were meant to smoke you would have been born with a chimney on your head.

Des, could that be the reason for the stove pipe hats often seen worn in old movie clips of USA?

Just think if they still had those stove pipes how easy it would have been to paint the funnel markings of whatever company you worked for .if the shipowner gave them to you free , then all the advertisement free of course he would of got. More conspicuous than mere cap badges that one had to purchase with 50% of them. I would of plumped for Blue Star line , you could take if off and stare at it and imagine Newcastle Brown Ale . JS

I seem to remember that we called them "scuttles". I was on Capetown Castle and few others including Transvaal Castle/SA Vaal when it changed flag. Was ships photographer then retrained as Radio Officer and sailed with Maersk.

All the Fyffes steamers had scoops, worked pretty well until the weather got up and best not to leave them out when transiting the Panama, bugs and lock walls considered.

Cabin vents were called Punkah Louvres back in my P&O days! Capable of swiveling and directing a stream of air - also worked when aircon was introduced!
