Hi sailor 63. I was on the Richmond Castle from jan to apr 67 , so, we where doing the same run at the same time . I had just done a year on the Nina Bowater which was my first ship, running to US and Canada. This was my first trip to a third world country and boy did I enjoy it. I joined the ship in North Shields, which was another experience! Back to the story, our first port of call was Genoa where I actually paid for it for the very first time Called in at Legorn which I have no recollection ofother than eating my first pizza . To this day I have not found one as good. Down to port said for a bible to help us on our way Darese lam the only recollection of that place, I had to have two teeth out and boy was that scary. Then it was the delightful delectable anything that a hot blooded youth could wish for, Mombasa! . I wont linger on that because it would take to long. Then we headed down to South Africa. I`m sure we went to more than one port that trip but over the years I have been to most on that coast and I get mixed up . The one that really sticks out is Capetown and the introduction to Delmonicos and thats another story. Heres to Castle boats.

    Default Fruit Boats!

    Hi Wilkie,
Yes that was one of the old Fruit Boats as they were known!
I nearly had a chance to get on one but turned it down, sorry i did!
Anyway here is a bit of thrivia on them!
    Cheers

These smaller cargo ships of the U-C fleet were known as 'fruitboats', South African fruit being a predominant part of her return cargo.. All were of between 7 and 8,000 grt. Sister ships were the RICHMOND CASTLE, RIEBECK CASTLE, ROCHESTER CASTLE, ROSLIN CASTLE, ROWALLAN CASTLE, ROXBURGH CASTLE, RUSTENBERG CASTLE and TINTAGEL CASTLE. Their route encircled Africa with stops on the east coast such as Beira and Mombasa thence through Suez and home.

But you most probably knew all this anyway!
    Cheers
