Default Union Castle Staff Register Web Site.

Chris,as you say you are open to all,but maybe your title confuses people using the word STAFF.Deck,Engine and Catering regarded themselves as crew but never staff,I think staff were people that worked in the office.

hi Jim you are quite right. to me staff means chief steward and upwards. I suppose with deck crew it was cadets up. these; as most staff and officers, considered themselves to be above the common herd. you could joke with or swear at a 2nd steward or head waiter, and also I suppose with a bo'sun or 2nd engineer, although I knew a couple who thought they were a bit superior, a kipper down the ventilator usually cured these (no pun intended). it was different on cargo and cargo/passengers, where the only one you call sir was the skipper.

I chose the word "staff" deliberately because the site is for ALL of B&C including shore based people...... I even include Engineers !

Nothing to do with the current thread. You are entitled to your prejudices.
I would just like to think that none of them apply to my web site. It is simply to record as much history as possible of the people and the ships that made up a wonderful shipping company.

'only an assistant steward', Alf mate dont put yourself down like that. We were all crew including the officers, we ALL had an important part to play.

chris. I sailed on at least six castle boats for about ten trips. at no time was it ever mentioned that union castle line was part of clan or any other line.

Clan line merged with Union Castle in 1955. It was billed as a merger but it was infact a takeover by the Cayzers. The original ownership with was Clan 60% U-C 40%, but it ended up at 57-43% in Clan favour.
Within a year all U-C directors on the board had all been replaced with Clan men.
