Yeh, I spent three trips on her 1971, two as a winger and one as public room steward with a chap called Freddie Wicks, we worked in the Golden Room disco at night time serving drinks and day time on the pool deck.As a winger was a bit of a work up, two sittings tree times a day, but plenty of o/time, happy days.

The SA Vaal departs capetown on her final voyage september 1977 - she would successfully become a cruise ship under the names - festival - island breeze and big red boat 111 - under the name big boat - note the flying off pennant - she would be scrapped - i have often wondered why - safmarine does not have its own designated shipping line category as they have a rich history and i could or would enjoy sharing all i have on the line - images from my collection

truth be told the male passenger honywell went overboard in 1970 then a lady passenger mrs josephine van ingen went overboard in 1973 but in a log of the sa vaal of 1969 there was a pickup of a greek seaman again from the vaal voyage 55 from capetown to southampton and the log said the trans fair to place at 2 am in the morning on 2.11.1969 and here it gets vague = the greek seaman was transferred ( from ? a greek tanker ?) ....but no reason is given why - its the 5 line in the log entry log entry for the trip attached - i also cannot confirm if any stewardess went overboard
