Think I'll stick with the green green grass of home. The cruise passengers will look back on their visit there and say 'WHY'
I know what you mean Ivan, unless you just like brown dry landscape. My sister in law came to stay a couple of years back, she lives near Brisbane, she just kept asking me what i had done to my lawn, its so green she said, well, if you see my lawn, its nothing special, i guess she was not used to seeing lovely green landscapes.
I found the grass in OZ very hard and sharp, still have the scars on my back and Dorothy was very light!

You said 7 or 8 skinned out, blimey that's a small number, the tanker I was on in NZ I think only the Skipper Mates and two engineers were left aboard, and I only stayed because my brother told me to emigrate and get a cruise out of it.

#39 I nearly went in 1954 Des , with the catering boy from Whitley Bay . The main thing that held me back was the 30 pound my old man would of had to pay if I did as he was my surety . And if we had met in the future would of never heard the last of it. 30 quid was a kings ransom to him and to most people in those days . Instead I saw it out and received the 30 pounds myself , plus 30/- a week dole for 12 weeks in 1957 . After that it was back to sea with or without a cert. I was lucky and was with , and my 37 pounds a month as 3/m no overtime seemed like another Kings ransome. Cheers JS
