As an example; RMT represent about 700 seamen who work for my most recent employer (Calmac) and in October they achieved a 7.2% pay rise with a few other niceties besides.

700 seamen .......now thats laugh.....700 we had that many in the horsley hill area of south shields ......wonder who will be the last to pay union dues to a defunct style of politics .....and has he been born yet .....the biggest union of all the most members ever in that union ..... .......the union of the socialist repuplic of russia......keep flying your red flag ......the biggest union ....now the biggest pariah in the world ......but the demise is not far off now even for them.........cappy
Jim just a shame the RMT did not put up much of a fight for the P&O lads.
Just for those who bash the Unions, Why has Union membership been increasing over the last few years? Perhaps people are tired of getting shafted by unscrupulous employers.
Not everyone has the good fortune to work for an employer like Nissan.
Very little they (or any other union) could do to be fair, especially since the Government has zero interest in taking action against such an unscrupulous employer.
In the 90s there was once a proposal from within the EU that ferry runs and various coastal shipping etc be covered by a cabotage law which would force the companies concerned to utilise crew from the countries served, e.g. Dover-Calais would have to be crewed by French or British crew with limited scope for crew from other EU countries..
Rather bizarrely it received widespread support, however that proposal was stopped in it's tracks by one particular country utilising it's veto.
Absolutely no prizes for guessing who that was.
The quote by Dempsey was reported on th online news. It's amazing how socialists quote Dail Mail in defence of their views.
Increase in Union membership is in the Public or ex public industries
The alleged quote (which is likely an outright fabrication) originally appeared in the Mail on Sunday - it is their story. That article has now appeared on the Daily Mail website, see here: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...alled-off.html
They key phrase you're looking for is: "The Mail on Sunday has been told that during crunch talks earlier this month, Eddie Dempsey, chief negotiator of the Rail Maritime and Transport (RMT) union, declared that an improved pay offer tabled by Network Rail was ‘the best deal we can negotiate’."
Someone who doesn't agree with the views of the Mail or it's readers isn't necessarily a socialist, it just means they're not a bigot.
#29, readership of D. M. OVER 2M, so they are bigots, aye right.
As stated I read Dempsey's quote on an online news forum.
