Out side of UK the coldest place I ever visited was Lulea in Sweden.
Last ship in before the sea froze over for the winter, was the third week of December in about 64.
Went out on deck for a smoke, only there for about 3, maybe 4 minutes, bloody shoes frozen to the deck.
#32 Been there a couple of times John , but believe it or not Apart from Murmansk the most uncomfortable place for being personally cold was Venice . Even the steam steering quadrant froze up on the ship and we had to pour hot water over. JS
coldest for me was 7 islands dec 1960 ......threw water in the air it changed to snow .....saw my ist bigger than big iceberg .....one of the most beutiful sights i have ever seen .....if a vessel hit one of those big boys there was only one winner.........i seem to recall at night we slowed down in the midst of them what a learning curve in life and getting paid to see it .....folk are paying thousands to go on trips to see them now .....R683532
New York, winter 69/70, so cold that all steam deck equipment had to run at almost wide open, they were starting to freeze on tick over.
Discharging heated cargo and some clown shut all the heating coil returns and burst every single pipe. We had to work round the clock to repair them all on return trip to Curacao.
Well I noticed a few of the posts have gone off course, as is the norm, guilty meself me lawd!, but watching another news channel and the newspaper review part, one of the intelligent reviewers asked why when the Dartford bridge was closed by the 'just stop oil' protesters (who just happened to be two Kiwis') why didn't motorists use the Severn bridge instead, Ain't edification wunderfull.:cripes::pat_head:
Off subject but who cares! coldest for me was a on a rig doing repairs at Olensvag, Norway near Stavangar February 1995, it was colder outside at lunchtime than the galley freezer, the freezer was -18C and it was -24C outside temp at midday some days. We even walked to the local pub which was about 3k away and used to get to the pub about 20:00 but it was very quiet and the locals did not turn up until about 22:00. We found out that a lot of Norwegions make their owns spirits at home get pissed there and then come out for a a few drinks later at night the reason being the extortionate cost of drink in Norway. Over a fiver for a pint at that time.
