    Default Floods

I see once again in the Eastern States of Australia and not for the first time , that houses built on the flood plain are again in jeorpardy . If this is going to be a frequent event maybe some brain box should design a habitation built on pontoons or a flotation base rather than a concrete one. Either that or take note of Noah’s answer to the problem. It must be terrible to lose your home twice in as
    many years . JS

Dont know why all the Flood Zone Areas dont have their Houses built on Stilts like many in Queensland!

By now with previous experiences like this , surely one would think twice before re Building the same again!

Feel very sorry for all those People who have lost Everything! Many not even insured! ???

The problem goes back a way.
Councils after the war allowed building to go ahead just about any where.
Many builkt on what are flood plains.

Did hear the NSW gov will buy back the land from those effected so they can build elsewhere.

The NSW Govt are to go ahead with raising the biggest Dam in Sydney the Warragamba, That will mean that a huge parcel of land further down the river will no doubt be built on, so that when the Dam collapses with the pressure there will be more disasters. I worked on the the dame reinforcing it many years ago'

When I see these pictures of flooding , it always reminds me of a ship or boat unable to get rid of water on deck due to lack ofscuppers and/ or discharging ports. When I had 50% share in a motor cruiser with a half cabin, my mate who wouldn’t know one end of a ship from the other , could never understand why I would never go out to sea with such , and said we must stay in the canals and inland waterways , one sea lopping onboard. Into the well , of the craft would have spelt disaster as would not have been able to get rid of the the water fast enough. The first thing I noticed about Australian roads in WA thirty odd years ago was the lack of camber on the roads and the poor lack of drains . After being in Singapore and Malaysia who I would imagine have always had the rainfall now being experienced in Australia never had the disasteruous results now occurring in the eastern states simply because they had 6 feet drainage ditches running alongside the roads to a much bigger outlet , usually the sea.
I think a lot of the problems today are lack of forethought and poor engineering knowledge of years ago. JS

Correct John, no bloody camber to be seen anywhere.
Major problem here in Victoria after such heavy rain, and we are told to expect about 100 to 150 mm on Thursday, is that the roads wash out.
Result, pot holes held together by bits of bitumen.
Some look more like bomb craters.

Ah! John another memory released from the brain. I remember walking along a road in Singapore and my drunken mate disappearing into one of those drains, hell of a job getting him out, but he sobered up quick enough. The only thing in Aus at the moment is that we are not used to having all this flooding year on year, and all Govts and councils have been caught with their pants down, maybe we will end up with the inland sea from the past.

Can’t remember a year in the UK where the council were not caught. With their pants down every winter , with a lack of stored salt for the roads . All you got was excuses excuses excuses, Cheers JS

Told it will begin Wednesday at about mid day. Well it began about 0900 hours and now the sky is clear.
Thursday we are told will see the biggest rain bomb ever, well maybe.

Forecasting the weather is still to some extent a chance to get it right, so far down here in Victoria the weather men are not doing so good.
