I worked in two freezing works in Auckland, constructing new floors; in the first one we looked in at the cattle kill once, watched a big Māori bloke put the hammer gun to a cows head and bang it was gone, untill it started kicking, that was enough, but it didn't put us off nicking some chilled sheep and cutting it up to fit in our tool boxes. The second one was more outside work but the squeals of the pigs could still be heard. No option in those days work was not easy to come by.
