    Default Woolworths

The picture below I found on the internet.
I have never seen one of these on the British roads.

Mike, It was the one shop that I missed the most when they shut up shop. We grew up with Woolies, spent your 3d pocket money there on a Saturday.

    The Flood of 1953 | Peoples' Stories | CanveyIsland.org

In the efforts to restore confidence there were certain objectives; one was to persuade Woolworths to build a store on the Island, another to persuade Barclays to build a main bank rather than the sub-office and also to persuade Building Societies that it was safe to lend money for property purchase. After a two-year standstill period during which time most properties were restored, and the sea walls made good and heightened by three feet and in parts strengthened and the area generally cleaned up, Canvey Island again “took off”. Woolworth’s brought in a “mobile shop”, a pantechnicon suitably fitted, to test the market on three days each week. This was a success and they built the store – the vehicle was later used at Basildon until the shopping centre there was built.

#4. Ref.Banks and building society’s of past years. I bought two houses in Uk never paid them off, and both. Purchases were through a building society where you were paying off the interest for the first 20 years or so. Never knew anyone who bought through a bank loan direct. The interest rate was usually either side of 8 %. A 5% deposit was usually required and proof that you could repay the loan. In Australia the system was different when I arrived in such that all house purchases were through bank loans , what you paid off the house monthly came straight off the capital owing and was really not too big a burden even though the interest rates were still 8%.
Today with interest rates about 2% I fail to understand the weeping and wailing of those in the housing market.Who was the PM after the war who said “ you’ve never had it so good” . I think in today’s society very few have it as tough as we had , we knew no better , but most of us survived . JS

John it was tough at first purchasing a house but we did it. All on one wage I might add plus able to afford car and holidays after a few years in the house. If you recall? You could only take out a loan if you earnt enough and it went on the one wage without any overtime or penalty rates. Now it goes on total income for the family including any casual jobs they might have. It might have been tough back then but it was fecking fair to the family in the end. As I recall it was assumed that after five years the repayments remained about the same but wage rises bought you into a better financial position. Then along came all these fecking right wingers against the unions and look where it has got the work force today. MUA forever I say as they did a lot of good over the years towards the country. Not to mention other unions as well but some forget about those good things
That's the way the mop flops.

My thanks to Brian for this site.

I left the guild part of the MUA in 2002 and conditions were the best I had seen in 50 years. Am now a member of AMSA ( allied merchant seafarers association,) so hope to be able to get an update of conditions today. Otherwise I don’t have a modern idea of anything. Cheers JS

I was in the old Carpenters and Joiners and bricklayers union. the BWIU and I think there was a big mistake to amalgamate into a giant union, we always helped other unions in strife, but from my prospective the big unions let the little ones be picked off one by one, they also didn't back the ATCU, so now they have to start all over again.

More unions now amalgamating as membership drops.
The Australian Maratine Union merged with the CFMEU to become the CFMMEU now.

Mortgage rates at 18% here in Oz back in the 90's, but we managed.

Mike, no such buses here in Oz as far as I know.
But Woolworths, there are so many companies of that name.

Woolworths South Africa, is it still going Vern?
    Happy daze John in Oz.
