    I absolutely detested watch keeping,every chance I got I took daywork,any fellas here felt same.

    I was the complete opposite, hated day work, loved steering, once did a week of 8 hours a day on the wheel while tank cleaning; just being relieved for meals, loved it, windows open, lovely breeze, watching the rest of the crew dragging Butterworth gear around, covered in shitty oil.

    Steering and tank cleaning Des, you ole multi tasker,my next post was goinng to be about tank cleaning,was trynig to think of the gadget that hose sat in when tank cleaning but remembered,saddle.take care fella

    Not on Ships Mo but i did the Large Caltex Tank Cleaning (Sandblasting) at the old Cat Cracker Units in Durban Years back, really hot and Dirty worl, had to dress in full protective gear as they were the Oil Tanks, terrible Job! Only a small Entry door and that was it! Ug!!

    Oh yes and thinking back, there were the times that on waiting for a quick turnaround at Londons KG5 , i took on some extra work helping the Lads off loading Bags of Flour from the Lorries, onto Crates Dockside, which in turn were laoded onto Ships there.
    So besides the leave pay which i still received ,up to 21 days on the Round Africa Runs, the extra came in handy too. But did not do that too often! The UCL Lads were always very flush with the cash! But guess so were many other Lads from various Lines!
    Best of times though, if only one again!!!
