Shackleton's ship has been discovered virtually intact not far from its last known position.

Have just seen footage on the BBC news site. The state of preservation is remarkable.

When on the Seaforth Clansman during a 4 year period was there , we did many dives on wrecks, a few being old German U- boats . We did one early on in my career on such a vessel as the Clansman Just north of Ireland .I was sitting in the control room watching the divers out of the bell and entering the wreckage , on the monitor on video. There was a newspaper in one of the compartments and the camera zoomed in on and showed the date of February 1942 and showed the news of the day. I immediately thought this was the divers having a joke on those watching so didn’t fall for it. The pictures were as clear as those shown of Shackletons ship of today or maybe even clearer. I often wondered afterwards if that newspaper on the submarine could have been genuine , but failed to see how it could have survived in the water , so had to assume it was a reproduction in plastic made to fool idiots like me at the time. However still have doubts even today , so have to keep telling myself it is just wishful thinking of 42 years ago. Still don’t want to fall to any divers subterverge . They got me once before by dropping a small explosive device ( thunderjack ) right behind me in Portsmouth Harbour right on the time of a suspected terrorist bomb going off.
Got my own back with one of them in Gibraltar when he was a newly promoted QM on a minehunter , when met ashore and went on the pizz with, he finished up crossing the high street via the bonnets of the traffic. Picked up by the naval shore patrol, disrated back to leading seaman. His pals came up to me and thanked me profusely for assisting him back to normalcy , as apparently his promotion had gone to his head and he was a little martinet. JS

One of the more amazing facts about the discover of the ship is the general condition of many parts.
Some of the ropes and lines still there more than 100 years later.

Could be the could has helped to preserve them.

Little known fact Ernest joined Castle Line 1898 and was master of the Troop ship Tintagel Castle, when she carried troops to S. A..

I was wondering whether the water down under the Antarctic has less salt, the preservation looks remarkable. I bet our friend Brenda is very happy with those pictures.

To cause corrosion it would need air or oxygen also I think Des. Believe she was a wooden hulled ship in any case ?

Correct, wooden hull and no air down there to assist with corrosion.
There have been a number of similar built ships which have lasted for many years.

Think a ship from the time of Henry 8 is partially preserved.

That’s the one almost in Portsmouth Harbour John used to pass that every time went into Portsmouth .JS
If you ever get into Gosport go to the submarine museum and see the excellent condition of the RN submarine Hollande 1 , sunk off the Eddystone in 1912 and the first am to believe of the RNs commissioned subs. Had a short life at sea , Liverpool to The Eddystone .,We found it on the fish finder , and a naval salvage team later recovered and as said is now a museum piece . JS
