Re: happier days
Had some good Christmas days on the Kiwi coast, then when I left the sea and working in Blyth power station had to work most bank Holidays as on shift work, then offshore worked Christmas and New year.
As said once the children get older it loses a but, then the grandchildren come along and you have to go along with them.
Only when I was rigging in the yards on the Tyne was I sure of being off. My wife loves it she has stuff in every room in the house, takes days to put everything out and she still has loads left.
Regards Michael

Re: happier days
Well as said Xmas is all over Red Rover! Myself its neither here nor there, had a quiet one alone with the Wife, no Kids or anyone here this Year! And that suited us both just fine! Spoke and wished all on the Blower of course, as well as my Daughter in Birmingham!
Yes Xmas nowdays seems so much different than Years gone by, but like many things changes come along!
That it from me and me and me LOL
Cheers

Re: happier days
I have had to check this up on line as Christmas was never a public holiday in Scotland. It would seem it only started in 1958 but I had to work every Christmas day from 1960 to 1966 while serving my apprenticeship, unless it fell on a Saturday or Sunday. The office staff did get the day off. I think it was about 1970 that the trades were given Christmas day.
The New Year celebrations was what we looked forward to, three and a half days of non-stop parties.

Re: happier days
Do you still take a slice of bread and butter , and a piece of coal with you when first footing Bill. Today would imagine that would be margarine and some substitute for the coal to keep some minority group happy. With maybe a police officer in attendance with a breathalyser handy. JS

Re: happier days
Hi John P.
Hope everything turns out well for your family, very hard not to see your brand new grand daughter, especially at this time, but build up the hugs in readiness, and hope you have plenty of time with them as the year moves on.
Cheers Des

Re: happier days
JP, hope everything gets better family wise.
Bill, can remember my father going to work in the yards on Christmas days, as you say N. Y. was the big celebration.
Can't remember dates of when Scotland started to celebrate Christmas with a holiday.
