Since the Virus came there are so many now who will not use public transport.
Result, second hand cars prices are going wild, plus the fact that here in Oz all cars have to be imported, takes time.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

I haven’t driven for 5 months Cappy , and only miss it if Gwen gets out of the wrong side of our spring loaded self massaging bed , and says she can’t drive me where I want to go , and needs the one car she has to do other things. I can only get my own back by pulling the plug on her side of the bed. Cheers JS

John very little to do with the use of public transport which has been curtailed, there is a world wide shortage of computer chips which all modern cars need, on certain new cars there is a 12 - 18 month waiting period because of lack of parts/chips. You can still buy a new car off the shelf, but it may not be the one you want or wanted, but it will not suffer any depreciation in its first year as in yore. People are changing their used cars for newer used cars, so nothing has changed there, you get good money for your old car but have to pay good money for your new used car, the deciding factor is still 'the cost to change' so many good cars out there these days, its hard to buy a lemon. However if your heart is on a particular model then you will be held to ransom, market forces rule as always, most cars these days are good for 200,000 miles plus if looked after properly. Handyman at one of the hotels we frequent bought a top of the range used Jaguar pre pandemic for a song (owner's husband had died, she didn't want it) its now 14 years old and looks like new and as if it left the showroom today.

Ivan, yes the computer chip is a problem.
But here in Oz it is the fear of using pubic transport that drives it.
But yes, my niece who has bought a new car has to wait until April next before it will be delivered for her.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

well the son has a 1985 car and I have a 1975 car and both are more value than a new one for sure. The only computer chip in them is between the lug holes. Here in Oz these old cars are selling for ridiculas money and they are getting buyers all the time Think that the penny has finally dropped that the new cars have no tolerance in anything as they are designed to be built at the cheapest rate. Most of them will kark it simply becuase of a filiment of wire breaking. Not like our old bangers that would keep going even if one cylinder was not firing. Yes I do have a 2010 car as well but get hissed of with it simply because I do not know what all the buttons and such like are for. Still reckon that most of the accidents on our highways/motorways are because they set the cruise control and forget that they have to decrease for bends. Plus the younger ones think that the round thing in front of them is just another gadget that does not need constant contact. Put bluntly my 1975 torana that I purchased years ago for $1500 is now worth $50,000 but is deffinatly not for sale unless I want to loose my wedding tackle to the son lol.
That's the way the mop flops.

My thanks to Brian for this site.

    I agree Les.
My Land Rover is now almost 18 years old.

But unlike the new ones is built on a chasis and even the guy in Land Rover service told me hang on to kit, they do no make them like that any more.

Modern ones have to many lights on the dash board, often no spare wheel, need premium fuel, now at over $2 a liter, and specialists to service them.

Have a bingle and half the car will collapse metal so thin.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

When we came back from NZ I bought a small Suzuki Swift, five years old, cost nothing to run, don't even know what the resale value is, A thimble full of petrol takes us into town, we got $250 petrol voucher each from the Govt, can't use it all and they say they are giving them to pensioners again next year, so all sorted

Ps Cappy if you are not traveling in the back seat I'd be careful, you are within hand range.
