    Default Good old days

    Lost Words From Our Childhood

Mergatroyd! Do you remember that word? Would you believe the spell-checker did not recognize the word Mergatroyd? Heavens to Mergatroyd!

The other day a lady said something to her son about driving a Jalopy; and he looked at her quizzically and said, "What the heck is a Jalopy?" He had never heard of the word jalopy! She knew she was old ... But not that old.

Well, I hope you are Hunky Dory after you read this and chuckle.

About a month ago, I illuminated some old expressions that have become obsolete because of the inexorable march of technology. These phrases included: Don't touch that dial, Carbon copy, You sound like a broken record, and Hung out to dry.

Back in the olden days we put on our best bib and tucker.

Heavens to Betsy! Gee whillikers! Jumping Jehoshaphat! Holy Moley!

We were in like Flynn and living the life of Riley ; and even a regular guy couldn't accuse us of being a knucklehead, a nincompoop or a pill. Not for all the tea in China!

We wake up from a short nap, and before we can say, "Well, I'll be a monkey's uncle!" Or, "This is a fine kettle of fish!"

Poof, go the words of our youth, the words we've left behind. Where have all those great phrases gone?

Long gone: Pshaw, The milkman did it. Don't forget to pull the chain. Knee high to a grasshopper. Well, Fiddlesticks! I'll see you in the funny farm. Wake up and smell the roses.

Leaves us to wonder where Superman will find a phone booth...

    See ya later, alligator! Okidoki.

You'll notice they left out "Monkey Business"!!!

WE ARE THE CHILDREN OF THE FABULOUS 40’s and 50'S ... NO ONE WILL EVER HAVE THAT OPPORTUNITY AGAIN .. WE WERE GIVEN ONE OF OUR MOST PRECIOUS GIFTS: LIVING IN THE PEACEFUL AND COMFORTABLE TIMES, CREATED FOR US BY THE "GREATEST GENERATION!"

John, first it was Horlicks and Hobnobs and tucked in by 10 pm, now you speak of a Pink Lion that talks and you're also reading Snugglepuss
Maybe Horlicks is out of your league?, us Ovalteenies don't get these problems . PS, Do they keep Snugglepuss on the top shelf now? I haven't
    seen one for yonks

Glad to say Pea souper "Smog/Fog" isn't the norm today, Talk the leg off an iron pot, High as a kite, When three in a bed was on a dartboard,
As hard as nails, Whet ones whistle, Paint the town red, At sixes and sevens. I love thinking of "the good old days" as seen through the eyes of
a child, but would you really want to go back to those days now that we are used to all the luxuries we have, I mean we had no TV or fitted carpets,
no double glazing or central heating, no microwave ovens or computers, fridges and freezers, the milkman's horse s manure fed our fed our vegetables,
coal and coke was delivered in sacks no electric blankets but we did have stone hot water bottles that woke everyone up when they were kicked out of bed when they got cold. But for all of that, we were happy as we didn't know any different, as they say "ignorance is Bliss", cheers.

But I think we in the end became better people for all of that.
We appreciate what we have and worked hard for it, no hand outs then.

Yes John, for the privelege of getting up at 5030 hours, getting to the paper shop by 0600 hours and carrying a bag full of papers for about 50 houses in all weathgers 7 days a week.
All for the princely sum of 9 shillings and six pence a week
