#21. I always looked for a snigger in the States when you said your name was John , used to say in some cases John by name and not by nature . JS.

Being called John in USA can have other connotations. Like the dunny for example.

Re: Special pet names between lovers.
Have put on another post somewhere. But McLeod is a very common name in Stornaway I found and I sailed at different times at lest three where I had a Murdo McLeod on board , and apparently they were no relationship to each other. Another time in the North Sea had Occassion to talk to 3 Murdo McLeod’s who were skippers on 3 different ships , and this was on the VHF, and these were 3 brothers ,I thought their father had been too tired to think of different names in case he forgot them , but could remember 1 2 and 3. There was a time when I thought everyone from Stornaway must be called Murdo McLeod. JS

John, the MacLeod's from Stornoway first names seemed to come in batches. There was a well known TV presenter Donny B MacLeod on Pebble Mill at One, the B was given by the school master as two others in the class had the same names so he had them as A B & C to distinguish who he was referring to. The B stuck and he used it through his life.
