John S. Cappy's going disagree, between c410 to 1066 the Vikings were playing havoc all along the eastern seaboard and even settled in Yorkshire!

The Shetlands, and Orkney islands were ruled from 850 ad by the Vikings, along with the counties of Caithness and Sutherland on the Scottish mainland. That lasted until 1468 when the islands and the mainland were giver back as a dowery , and been in Scots ever since. Just a wee bit of history the low landers tend to forget, I was born in Thurso Caithness by the way

About 4 miles up river from here is Benfleet, local history records the Vikings had a well established settlement there with a fortress and 200 vessels,
the Saxons kicked them out when King Alfred sent his army to Benfleet in 894, it was a decisive battle known as the Battle of Benfleet, this whole section
of the Thames is steeped in history, maybe not everybody's thing, but can be very interesting , cheers .

That was a blast from the past cappy, first heard it in the sixties, same joke but another version. Dick Turpin holds up a stagecoach, he
orders everybody out, after running his eyes over the passengers, he declares, "I'm going to rob the ladies and rape the men", one of the passengers,
A portly old Gent, says "Surely sir you mean you'll rape the women and rob the men,
suddenly a little fellow pipe up in a camp Kenneth Williams voice, "Oh shut up, Mr Turpin Knows what he means, it was a good un in those days, cheers.

#2 Its only a brief outline Bill taken from a Readers Digest of that era. Probably other sources will be different. Hard to imagine Cappy as Eric the Red, he doesnt have Red hair to start with. Will be lucky if hes got any hair by now in any case. He gave up the raping and pillaging when he starting drawing his O.A.P. JS

From the same source....The Worlds smallest Nation. The Vatican City, Stato Citta Del Vaticano. The Absolute Ruler is the Pope, who is elected for life. The population is fewer than 1000. Latin is an official language, it has a birthrate of zero. there is no Income Tax. It is less than a quarter of the size of Londons Hyde Park. Has its own flag, bank, broadcasting station and postage stamps and its own diplomatic corps. the country is protected by the Swiss Guard, A corps of papal bodyguards. Founded during the Renaissance . Is the last surviving remnant of the Papal States, which were abolished in 1870. Vaticans Independance was guaranteed by Mussolini in 1929. in the Sistine Chapel the frescoes and other artifices and also the Swiss Guards uniforms are said to have been designed by Michelangelo.

The hundred year war that lasted 116 years.
But if you look at the way France now behave to UK I would say it is still going on.
    Happy daze John in Oz.
