Re: Death penalty
Re #50. I remember sailing with a fairly elderly AB who had pure white hair and beard. His nickname was Ginger. He would often put the wind up me when he changed position on the bridge wing , creeping from port to starboard wings or vice versa through the wheelhouse on the midnight to four watch, especially on a moonlit night when all I saw was a ghost! especially if he was wearing a white T-shirt. I often said to him "For Christ's Sake Ginge-at least give a little cough!" I met him on another ship a year or two later and he was completely bald-either naturally or by design-but he was still called Ginger ! RIP Ginge ....can't recall your actual name, just Ginger.

Re: Death penalty
I know that this will go on and on .
With the DNA now it don't think there be many miss trials etc .
I will refer all to the Bentley case where the words " Give it to him " lead to a hanging .
For the youngsters on the site let me explain .
Bentley and his mate ( younger mate I might add) we breaking into a factory roof .
When the police arrived on the roof The young lad had a gun.
Now Bentley ( with a brain of a child) knew the game was up .
When the policeman asked for the gun, Bentley turned and said these words " give it to him ".
Did he mean " give him the gun as we are nabbed, or shoot him .
The young lad shot the policeman .
As they were both Charged with Murder and they may have been to hang .
But the younger git was under age .
And I'm sure he is walking the streets yet .
Now was that fair ?
Ron the batcave
I makes you think

Re: Death penalty
Remember the famous case of Christy.Think it was around the 50ies.He lived in London and rented a place in his house to a young couple. The young lady turned up dead. With the help of Christy, the police found the husband guilty of her murder. He was hanged. Some time later, there were complaints*from Christie's*neighbors*about a smell*from his place.Turns out, he had dead bodies stashed all over the place. He was later hanged. That was one of the cases that brought about the end*of capital punishment. The husband had*been hanged*while he was totally innocent.

Re: Death penalty
Hi Den, see post 18 for story, if you can see this film on streaming etc,
'10 Rillington Place" is an excellent true account of the Christy case, it
stars Richard Attenborough as John Christy, John Hurt as the unfortunate Timothy Evans, great acting , a great film to watch,
in the 60s we went to Madam Tussauds, in the Chamber of Horrors was Christy's deck chair and a couple of other buts, evil sod, cheers.

Re: Death penalty
Yes remember when Madam Tassauds had all those lovely but as said Gruesome Statues, it was for me a very exciting Tour in 1959 , one day i was on Shore Leave. Its a pity that they took that all away, as when i again went many Years after in 2011 they had a new Section, still quite good but nowhere near as good as it used to be!
Cheers

I remember Dad {born 1901} telling me that he'd been to Madam Tussauds in the 1920s, he said they had so much more original exhibits at that time
but in the 30s there was a fire that destroyed a lot of stuff,I think it was also bombed during the war, so the Tussauds we saw was relatively new stuff, cheers

Re: Death penalty
Things were different in those day.
The Police just wanted some one to hang the crime on, there was not the investigating style of today.
Appeals were often very short and few won, the lawyers of those times were not so well informed in many instances of all the circumstances.
The laws have greatly changed over time added to which we now have the 'do good' brigade who think all can be saved, well not on my money they can't.
Murder, rape, child abuse, mugging old ladies, just waste them and save the state some money.

Re: Death penalty
#1.. Brian your original query . I am all for capital punishment and think it should never have been done away with. The argument about reasonable doubt is for the lily liveried. Today we live in a computerised age for nigh on everything. Why not do away with the human side of a courtroom and have a computer programmed to give the answers , no need for limp wristed judges and friends of a friend of the accused bringing in the wrong verdict from a jury. The usual argument against would be maybe the wrong man was executed will then not be for someone’s conscience to cause him or her lack of sleep. To me executing someone for taken another persons life illegally deserves to depart this earth. We live in a so called computerised world , give the job of judgement to them also , as they do most things today. JS

Re: Death penalty
On the net Tuesday.
In Japan on Monday six were hanged, most for murder.
They had been on death row for a number of years but when it comes to drop time they are only told four hours before.
No time for a last meal there.
According to the news they have another four lined up for Saturday!!!!!
Happy daze John in Oz.
