#7. That’s interesting Vic never heard that one . Mind the number of times have laying alongside custom house quay and watched the winos sitting on the bench seats there can see the problem of mistaken identity. What’s the real story ? JS

John, a seamen returned from the wars, was walking through the town with monkey on his shoulder, locals had never seen one. They believed monkey was a spy and strung it up.

There was a guy who was the mascot for Hartlepool F.C. which was called hangus the monkey, (the mascot not him) who stood for mayor as the monkey and was elected and I think was re-elected another twice. This would have been in the early 2000s
