In the Virgin Islands there are no Canaries either.

Do any of you know any other bits of useful information such as this?

not only are you correct in your observations but years before i ended up in spain i used to spend quite a lot of time in canaries, had some good mates all locals, and each and everyone all said the if admiral nelson had after he had thrashed the spanish at TRAFALGAR and then sailed down to the canaries they would have been a british protective country today,
to a man they all disliked being run by spain and would have prefered to be with us .
