Then you had the small issue with cassette tapes, all running on 50cycles but ships were 60 so there was a slight increase in speed,.

That's why we danced faster than the shore wallahs!

John maybe Vic could clarify it a bit better , but when on a DC ship and there were plenty at our time at sea, and on the more and more usage of gyro compasses , which had to run off an AC supply, then the power supply for such had to be changed , and if memory is right had to go through an inverter and then through a carbon pile to try and keep voltage fluctuations to a minimum otherwise your gyro would be wandering all the time. Remember buying a converter for DC to AC so i could use my tape recorder.
Filled tapes at home so had music in the cabin at night.
But it was a big bugger of thing to lug around, not sure where it ended up.
