A Very Sad Day On Merseyside
Singing Legend Gerry Marsden has passed away, His group Gerry and the Pacemakers.
Was the first in British history to have there first 3 singles enter the charts straight into the number one spot,
Ferry Cross The Mersey,
You'll Never Walk Alone,
Dont Let The Sun Catch You Crying, He will be very sadly missed in this part of the world.
Y N W A. Has to be the most played song on Merseyside and in actual fact is the lyrics of a prayer played at funerals on a daily basis, And of course Anfield and Liverpool Football Clubs adopted home signature song.
Rest in peace Gerry Y,N,W,A, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OV5_LQArLa0

Hi Terry. Only ever saw him the once in his latter years. The late fifties and most of the sixties were my time in music.

Sad news Terry. I used to see him walking about West Kirby out shopping with his Mrs when I lived in Wirral. Quiet man kept himself to himself in his private life.

Re: A Very Sad Day On Merseyside
Very sad news Terry. Met Gerry a couple of times and had a few pints. Really nice guy, genuine and down to earth. A true Scouser. I got to know him as Les Chadwick, bass guitarist with the Pacemakers was an old school fiend from primary school. Les and I sat next to each other through those early school years and after school would play out in the street. Many years later when he got married a crowd of us were invited to the evening reception. Needless to say Gerry and the other band members were there. What a night that was!!! Sadly Les died on 26th December 2019 in Sydney Australia from brain cancer. Rest in Peace Gerry, you will never be forgotten Mate.
Regards

Re: A Very Sad Day On Merseyside
One of the best groups to come out of UK.
On the net a tribute to him.
Began along with the Silver Beetles who later became the Beatles in about 1959
At one time more popular than them and had their first number one before the Beatles.
Made a few returns to the scene over the years, but bad health saw him give it away in 2018.
But Liverpool FC will see that his most famous number one will always be number one.
Happy daze John in Oz.

Re: A Very Sad Day On Merseyside
I have not been to a football match for many years, but the atmosphere at Liverpool, all singing THE song, comes over even on the TV, even if you are not interested in football, must be worth going for that alone, who knows, maybe if i,m in that area one day !!, kt

Re: A Very Sad Day On Merseyside
A great response lads thank you all, As John Callon said he was a private down to earth person i best remember him for his charity work and support for the Hillsborough families plight on Merseyside nothing was to much trouble to him i spoke with him a couple of times he would stroll around the ground {Anfield } Just like the rest of us reading and admiring the wreaths and flowers with heartfelt sympathy on what was the anniversary of the disaster every year many times singing Y,N,W,A, And yes keith if you ever get the chance come and join the supporters and sing along to the song the atmosphere inside Anfield football ground is captivating, I agree Vern sadly as the years roll on we loose not only our singing legends the world over but people from the entertaining business, Gerry was 78 years old in my opinion that is not old these days only reported he passed away after a short illness nothing added other than that. And its quite right to say as good as the beatles where Gerry and the pacemakers are certainly up there with the front runners of the Mersey Sound from the 1960s Regards all Terry.

Re: A Very Sad Day On Merseyside
Liverpool came to Oz a few years ago to play some charity matches.
One at the MCG in Melbourne was something the locals will never forget.
100,000 singing YNWA brought tears to the eye and chills up the spine.
I see that over the entrance to Liverpool football ground the You Never Walk Alone in metal work.
Ferry Cross the Mersey, a heartfelt cry about the town he loved so well, a very proud Liverpudlian who gave the world a song for ever.
Happy daze John in Oz.
