All this unfortunate bad publicity that the Australian Special Forces are receiving at the moment which to me is just casting aspersions on a very fine unit of the Australian Defence Force , has the usual effect on me as it may on others, it triggers memory’s of some of the contacts I may of had in the past. Two immediately. Jump to mind . I had one job up the Cambridge Gulf in Northern Australia and it was servicing a dredger brought in from South Africa she was dredging for diamonds. The bloke in charge was ex SAS and although he always had to accompany their finds ashore himself even though I volunteered to do so , he told me a lot of his past life. He was a member of an SAS team which climbed Mount Everest and the proceeds went to a charity. Don’t think it was ever published that I know of. There were many other tales too numerous to relate. The present bad press coming out leaves me just numb as it must others.
The other one was when shortly after arriving in Australia , we were living in a rented house. I had just arrived home on leave and we were having a normal torrential downpour. About 0200 hours there was a banging and shouting at the front door, getting out of bed , I opened the door and there was this. Bloke dishelved and soaked shouting and screaming at me saying quick call the SAS, I told him to pee off and shut the door in his face , going back to bed told the wife it was some drunk wanting the SAS. Getting up later there was a fire engine in the house 2 doors down, asking someone what’s up , the old woman who lives there was caught in her flooded garage in her car and her son had to call for help. I later found out it wasn’t the SAS he was saying but SES a totally different kettle of fish , he should of learned not to panic , and learn to pronounce his Es and As correctly. He was never friendly that bloke , I often wonder why.. JS

Just brings to mind of the recent program on our TV here JS.

SAS Australia
All about the number of recruits taken on , with an ex SAS in charge with two helpers to put these through a very tough and strict training course.
I cannot now recall how many started but think it was 15 ? Anyway it landed up with only 4 in the Final Episode after a very tough selection test along the way.

Most all of them just after a certain period of time pulled off their Number they had on their Arm and handed it back, thus indicating the end of their training.
The final two of six remaining, wee told they were not going t make the grade and dismissed, leaving the Four.
+I must say that some of the things that they were put through were were of the most dangerous and difficult , plus dont ask about the Stamina they needed!

All in all most done quite well, but not well enough.

A few of the Selection tests reminded me of some of the things i went through with the Legion Training, very tough, only difference was i could not just take my Number off and hand it in LOL

The Guy in charge was as said ex SAS and as hard as nails, no quater given!

But back to your comments JS , Indeed yes these SAS Lads are something else, and should be respected for what they do , putting all this on them is certainly not god ,and should be stopped in its tracks!

The few that may have done wrong alone should be put in the Spotlight and Punished, not the entire Force!!

I see the same bloke is to be in another SAS Episode in the UK ,so keep an Eye there Lads i enjoyed the Series here, i am sure there will be those of you who will enjoy it there, different Series of course but it will no doubt hold the same intense training

Must say that at least she tried had a lot of Guts to go on the show, unfortunately did not last too many days but did her best!

Whilst I can certainly see your point of view Vernon. I believe there maybe another side to the story. Guts is a funny word and it can easily be confused with that of someone craving public acknowledgement, be it for their notoriety,sympathy or just plain love. Or even just for the money. On the other hand it takes real guts to face an enemy and kill or be killed knowing there will be no national mourning at your decease from this life , all you can hope for if you do think about anything about your nothingness is maybe some public minded person might fight to have your name put on some remembrance stone to remind people you once existed. As you know seamen are renown for their black humour or most are . and on the battlefield I would imagine is the same . When you live with death on a daily basis , you either give up the job or try and laugh at it. Cheers JS

PS As for what you see on a tv screen for public entertainment I always try and guess how many takes they had to do before they got it right. However today the technicians are that clever it’s all done with magic. JS

Nurses are another breed of people who have a sense of black humour if they took every death personally they would go nuts. My sister who is a bit astern of me age wise , was nursing for many years starting at 15 as a cadet nurse. A 4 letter word out here which in a lot of society is considered obscene in her words hospital wise it used to be called Tish and she still uses it profusely when necessary. Nurses had a fake name for other things I reckon , but they are trade secrets. JS.

Sensationalism to me. Can't really see the point. Had enough of those nuns shouting and hitting me when I was a kid, don't want to watch it on TV. Just my humble opinion. Rather watch something that raised funds for some worthy cause.

your observations of your time with the ( holy order ) certainly brings back memories for me that where very similar, at least until my old man put a stop to the sheer bloody violence that was doled out when i was at school,
i was one day swinging on the door handle of the large oak door the entrance to our school when a nun sister cuthbert, took out from her skirts the thin cane she carried and beat me across the back, i of course didn,t appreciate
her kindly ways and took off to my home which was directly across the road, my old man escorted me back to school where after explaining to sister cuthbert that she was handling this matter all wrong, he picked up a large glass jar of ink and took the top off it and poured it all over her head. needless to say i was never ever taken to task ever again by any sadistic or deranged clergy or any holy order .

they had a legion barracks at almeria in spain. i used to pass it regularly as i kept my boat in almerimar marina.

No not ever there was in the Legion in the early 60's just before it all ended in Algeria, all that Fighting and lives lost was in vain in the end when they withdrew the Troops for good! Although many were happy i guess ??
