Re: US Election
Vic. again no disrespect to you and others. The count does not begin until the polls close on the west coast of the USA.
The only guess I can make is BBC and others were reporting what are called exit polls. Meaning reporters of people working for both parties stand in wait outside the restricted area that secures the entrance to the polling station (it varies by state from 50 to 200feet) and ask people how they voted. Those that answer, and don't tell them to get stuffed, the reporters extrapolate there numbers and these are issued to the news agencies.
With the computers of today being so fast: the polls can close at 7pm and blocks of numbers can be issued in minutes, but again, it's after the polls have closed.
I mention once on a site. I was campaign manager for a guy running for the local school board in a city within Los Angeles. A candidate was allowed two watchers that tabulated the vote count for the candidates. Our candidate was the heavy favorite to win. I instructed one of our counters to just give me the count of who got the votes, just in the first ten votes. And rush back with the results. This was done at all the polling station and when the vote started (after the polls closed) the ten vote counter came raising back to the HQ. I tabulated the vote and told our candidate to put the champagne away as he had lost. The counted had only begun, but he lost within a slight margin of what I had predicted. The bearer of bad news always got killed, our friendship ended. He was not a happy camper.
My only other foray into politics was working for Ronald Reagan's election as Governor of California. I met him numerous times and a really nice human being, and the best governor we had in California while I lived there. And I thought he was a good president too.

Re: US Election
Vic. I reread your post. Ok, the polls close, the counts begin. The polling stations all over the country start sending in their machine votes.
Some of the precincts, particularly in rural areas are small, lets say Canvey Island, Essex, they are done and send in their results to the central office. and similar places of the same size do the same, these results are released. Southend on Sea, is bigger and slower as do similar sized towns, and issue next. London is even slower and so forth, but the results are released by the central office as the come in.
Trump discouraged his voters from filing absentee ballots. The democrats filed absentee ballots because the didn't want to stand outside with the virus, these took longer to be counted than those voting in person by machine. That's why Trump jumped out to a massive lead which got eventually overrun by the slow counted democrat vote.
That's why, there were partial blocks of votes coming out. Once the got to the hand counting stage they issued tabulated votes twice a day. If they had waited until the last vote of 150 million voters were counted we would have known anything for five days,
Cheers, Rodney
Perhaps you didn't know that Biden suffers from a lifelong stutter, and that's why his speech pattern is hesitant at times.

Re: US Election
Rod, as said before the implications were that numbers had been given by officials at the polling station.
Last night BBC were in Philadelphia interview both candidates supporters, came to Trump supporter he ranted about the BBC and CNN, needless to say the segment was cut before he could finish.

Re: US Election
Postal voting goes on inmost western democracies, we have it here in Oz.
But like USA we do not look at them until the polls close, then there is a cut off date when all including those from overseas must be in.
As to the BBC, not the sort of company I would take very seriously, bit like the ABC here in Oz, not worth a cracker.
Happy daze John in Oz.

hi capt
i dont think biden has a opinion, or if he did i dont think he would be able to remember it, ( thats why he will not be the power in goverment, it will be kamala harris )
but whilst he and obama where in office the one thing that they achieved that will put anything Trump did into a cocked hat, will be the Hard won agreement that obama and biden thrashed out allowing iran to build nuculear weapons. and that is why Donald Trump, in my eyes with his un-diplomatic off the lip straight talking beats them two hands down.

I don't suppose Kamala Harris knew or knows much about the Friday Agreement but you can be rest assured Mr Biden still remembers everything about it.

Re: US Election
My personal recollection of Irish Americans was that most of them didn't actually know where it was, in the 50's and 60's I was being asked when are the British going to get out of Dublin, mind you they did have broader Irish accents than my late father from Galway and my late wife who was from Kerry. In all my years visiting family in Ireland I never met anyone who had drunk a glass of green guiness like I'd seen in New York.
