Re: Painting
Hi Ivan,
You are not wrong, there was a different mindset then. I remember on one trip when I was a galley boy on the 'Otaio', we had been warned, when rounding the Cape of Good Hope, in transit to Fremantle, that rough weather was due, the Roaring Forties. We fitted the riddles and tied all the pots to them, but within a short while the whole lot were bouncing around, as a young eager sprog I leapt to the 'defence' of the lunch, due in about 45 minutes, the Chief Cook, John Callum, grabbed me by the scruff of my neck and threw me out of the galley saying, 'f$%& lunch you'll scald yourself'.
After about 15 minutes things settled down, but most of lunch was on the deck, anything in the oven was aflame and had to be ditched, but nil desperandum lunch was on time,; there was enough soup left to top up from the stockpot, the Assistant Cook was tasked with making a variety of salads, John was going to make omelletes for starters and steaks for the main, I had to go to the handling room and get every bit of cooked meat, pork beef and lamb, and start carving. All the scuppers were blocked with the residue of lunch, ragout, potatoes and veg, but that could wait for after lunch was finished. Happy days.
As an addendum to this, my sister and brother-in-law were Ten Pound Poms on one of the Strath boats, they told me they experienced rough weather on the way to Fremantle and their meals consisted of SANDWICHES for a week!
Cheers, Paul.

Re: Painting
Paul,
Can you explain to me what your post has to do with the Main subject of painting.?

Re: Painting
Hi Mike,
My apologies, but we did 'paint' the deck with lunch, and in my weak defence I was caught up in the further discussion of H&S, is that explanation enough.

Re: Painting
The main reason is that many posts are taken away from the original subject.
which causes problems for the original poster.
