Ramping up
Everyone is "ramping up" these days. NHS is ramping up testing, industry is ramping up production of ppe gear, ventilators etc.
But what the bleddy hell is "ramping up" and where the heck did the term come from. I can hear the duty officer informing the bridge "ramp up" on a ro-ro vessel but "ramping up" doesn't fit,
Anyway, if we are to be in lockdown for months, as seems likely, my worries are "ramping up" as by the time lockdown is lifted my hair will be so long I'll look more like shaggy from scooby doo, than my normal well groomed self.

So what's wrong with just saying "increasing" instead of some fancy term that doesn't really describe what's actually happening.
Maybe I'm just a crusty old fart.

Re: Ramping up
I cringe every time I hear "tail back", where the hell did that term come from.

Re: Ramping up
If traffic tails back, it forms a long line and moves very slowly or stops:
There is traffic tailing back along the motorway for ten miles because of road repairs.
Is that why Stan LOL

Re: Ramping up
Stan you see we were all from a generation that spoke the Kings/Queens English and we called a spade a spade, though that term is now a racist statement.
But now they have developed a new era language claiming it sounds more realistic for the job at hand, though what the job at hand means is another story.
Ask the ladies of the nigt they may be able to explain that one.
Sadly the demise some years ago of common sense brought about this new language.
You may observe that it has been further enhanced by those who use Facebook or any of the otter social media.
