    Default 'Sailor's Valentine'

Treat the one you love to a romantic visit to your favourite museum this weekend for Valentine's Day and see if you can find this 'sailor's valentine' in our Lifelines gallery on the first floor. ⚓️❤️

In the 19th century decorative shellwork pieces like this were sold at ports in the West Indies to sailors, as gifts for their loved ones back home. Just one example of the romance of travelling the high seas!

To end Valentine's for this year wonder as to "Sweetheart brooches" (to be sent to loved ones)
historically were very popular but when ? WW1 / 2 ? More RN or forces or more common in the
earlier MM or even later MN ?

    Just wondered.
