Fresh Water

Fresh water I sometimes think how "Fresh it was". I remember being in Lagos and some getting "De bug" one having to be flown off at Cape town and another further up the S. African coast both extremely ill. Always thought of the water purity and never drank with out some fear. Never succumbed my self always flushed the Kidneys with good ale, cast iron guts maybe. Never proved to be the water mind, but always casted doubt. Always difficult in the E.R. when passing the communual jug (with floaters) lol in stifling conditions. One thing for sure you have to drink a lot of it in those conditions or the heat exhaustion will soon take over.

Lucky you're still here Shaun, quickest way to get dragged over the stern ! Only safe way was on the lee side, start swinging the bucket in an arc of 180 degrees, when the bucket is for'd of you, let it drop in the sea, draw in the line as it comes towards you and draw it up as it comes beneath you, you are then only lifting bucket and water and not fighting to drag the bucket in. This was the method we used on trawler (built 1914) to the Arctic, as FW tank for tea making only, we even cooked with salt water, washed with it (when we washed, too bluddy cold!), we used this method every day for general purposes. Trawler owners didn't believe in providing luxuries

I don't know if you all saw the millions of fish killed in the river system and Menindi lakes here in Aus, nothing to do with the bad drought that we were having, although that wouldn't have helped. Which begs the question why on earth would the govt allow huge farms to grow cotton one of the most water needed crops around. There is now going to be an inquiry but I bet they wont be charging a certain politician who give permission to some of the biggest farms to illegally siphon off millions of megaleters of water for their cotton crops. As John said Australia is not short of water there is just lack of will to pipe the billions of tons that run back into the sea into the big river systems or build huge dams in the bush.

When Ascania repatriated troops from Port Said to UK in December 1956 she ran out of fresh water with the need to call at Tobruk to top-up. After the sand and heat of the squaddies previous whereabouts this was no great surprise. Crew no doubt also used quite a lot of fresh while on stand-by in Cyprus for several days prior to heading for Port Said. Baths in passenger areas were piped salt with, if I recall correctly, a very small galvanized tub of fresh provided.

Many cruise ships call into ports in South Pacific islands.
Passengers rush to get ashore, many go to eat and drink in local establishments.
Result, often an outbreak of Noro Virus.
Reason, the water in some of these islands is far from being fresh, and whilst the locals have in many cases become immune to disease caused by it incoming have not.

I was on 3 ships that had salt and fresh water piped to the shower heads, I found the salt water soap supplied useless.

Washed in Daz and swarfega after working in the bilges flogging the main engine holding down bolts up more than once, boily and jocks straight over the side.

One of the few good things Gaddafi did before he was murdered was building the worlds biggest desalination plants.

You could get a lather with seawater and Teepol
