The SS Athenia was the first British ship sunk by a U-Boat only hours after Britain had declared they were at war with Germany. The fact there were American passengers on board, must have been a good reason for America joining World War Two.

I am surprised by your assertion that Russia didn't acknowledge the Merchant Seamen, they were the only country out of the Allies to do so with the Ukinov medal, which the British Govt told the Artic convoy veterans not to wear officially. The only Govt who never recognised the MN was Britain, it took nearly 70 years of struggle to get an official Merchant Navy Day.

I don’t see how the British government can instruct any civilian what he can’t and can do as regards medals. Unless they are worn on the Queens uniform. I wear the MN medal which one can purchase if a member or past member of the British MN and bought through the post. I wear this together with the 4 government medals , 1 British and 3 Australian on Anzac Day services, on civilian clothing of course. I know ex Australian army servicemen who wear American medals from Vietnam which were issued to them via the US. Have also seen clowns of the civilian world wearing their own medals on the right breast which is reserved for past family members , one would think someone would tell them even though it was in St. Paul’s Cathedral.. Cheers JS
HI John.
I got that from some post on here years ago.

Probably the one on Britain’s number one soccer player at the time and was shown to the country via TV . After receiving his OBE ( other baskets efforts ) was at some service at St. Paul’s and there he stands displaying it on the wrong breast, surrounded by military personnel as well. He musnt have been able to read either as every medal is issued with instructions where and when to wear . Cheers JS
#364. Tony Bliar is alright thank goodness , he shouldn’t go wrong as is a neck decoration, although one never Knows he may display it between his shoulder blades. JS
In St. :Petersburg in 2017 it was obvious Putin was very popular, so the local media told it.
How popular, depends on how you enjoy your freedom, the prisons are full of non Russians who do not like him.
It is hard to know exactly how popular as we were told at the time he was so popular he could if he wished become president for life, which I believe he now is.
But Russia is not the sort of country where you can be in opposition and last very long.
the people live their lives in a similar manner to us, we saw families having picnics by the river in the evenings, they go to cultural shows as we did while there.
But as tourists we were not allowed our on our own at night, had to be in a organised party.
Day time was a little easier but unless you know where you are going an organised outing is the best.
Last night in our news we saw three ex UK soldiers telling how they were off to Ukraine to join the fight.
One said he was prepared to die there to help freedom be returned!!!!!
shame usa bombed hiroshima,,nagasaki, first use of atomic weaponary
Thanks Marion, some people have short memories, I think it was dropped in the wrong place, it should have been on the Emperors Palace as he was the sole Godley encouragement the people listened to.

If Hitler had of had it available he would have used without second thoughts. And so will Putin if his backs to the wall. He doesn’t have a future without success of one sort or another. The Ukraine if wanted to avoid the present situation would have done what they are offering now , to be neutral. Whether that would have been accepted then is anyone’s guess and will always be debatable. However others consciences May have been a little clearer knowing they had done everything possible to avert the present state of affairs.
