Yes Rob, I am sure that is very true there was less graft/back handers in those days. But to state there was no corruption during Colonial times be it British, French German, Spanish, Portuguese or who ever is just daft.
I suspect it may have been Sierra Leone that asked for British intervention and assistance to put an end to the barbaric war that was ravaging that nation.( Blood Diamonds) I think the UK may still have a military garrison down there.
I like a few on here have sailed with Freetown crews and they are a lovely people, hard working(once they understand what needs to be done) sadly the shipping companies have cast them aside now as well. Last time I sailed with Freetown guys was on a Bibby Ship they were down the ballast tanks chipping and scaling +Painting.

Ah Lewis, Bullshit deflectors up again, my posting was in response to your post 17, where you state that the UK enslaved millions and was a warmongering nation, nothing to do with the anthems.
It is a proven fact that Socialist decry the efforts of this country, its achievements and its past.
Suggest you read history, where we brought peace and prosperity to a large percentage of the world.

Jim, if you read history there was very little starvation in Africa under UK rule. Most wanted self determination, that's why they wanted to break the ties.

Vic have you seen the conditions that people are still living in present day I wouldn't say we brought prosperity to them far from it.

Jim, if you ever get a chance to go to a lecture by Sir Rex Hunt, go it is worthwhile.
He worked in Africa, and states that poverty wasn't as bad then as it is now, Africans didn't starve under British rule as they do now.
The British knew that the harvests were cyclical, and when there was a good harvest, we made sure that some would be put in storage for the bad years. Result no starvation.
Under African rule, no food was stored in the good years for the lean years.

When you talk to people who are native to the x British colonies about how they felt now their countries are free and free from British rule of course I remember 1 comment made by an African of my acquaintance he said the British were a bunch of bastards but at least there were fair barstewards . We made many mistakes over the last Thousand Years and I think when you talk to people in Africa that we certainly weren't the harshest of the Colonial Masters . It's part of our rich heritage and strangely enough the Commonwealth are still talking to us so we couldn't have been that bad

Vic Rex Hunt died about 6 years ago.I was in Nigeria 1961 Lagos and Apapa Village that was just a couple of months after independence and considering that we had ruled the country for over a hundred years it was still a rather desperate place to live,I didn't see any prosperity.
I don't understand your statement which you say is proven fact that Socialist decry the efforts of this country,it's achievements and it's past.
