Indeed brings back memories of us Kids when young,lived on the farm those days in DeDeur outside Johannesburg,never owned a pair of shoes,walked some 4 km each way to School,come Rain Hail or Snow! Yes they were tough times but also some of the best Years I can recall/
There was one time as well ,when we lived in Roodepoort that we had a terrific Cyclone ,it hit the Residential Area we lived in,flattened many many Houses all over,but it was some Miracle that the House we lived in,a Double Story place on the Corner was untouched,you would not have believed it! Looked like a War zone all over! And besides winds we had Hail after that with guess what! Yes we Kids running outside with not a care ,had the old Bakerlite Hand Wash dishes over out Heads and the Hail pelting the C--- out of the dishes! Recall the noise as the bakerlite chipped away! LOL

I recall the year I was on Holiday in Powys ,stayed with a Pal of mine ,and used to get up at 6am for my Morning Walk.
It was down to - 5 most Mornings with thick Ice and Snow at times,i slipped along though through it all and really enjoyed Walking through the Fields with the Animals all sort of cuddled together! The Hills looked devine!
My mate said I was Balmy! LOL

I'm not about to deride the hardships that yourself and most of the elderly members went through as kids, I myself being about ten years younger or more can remember some of the hardest times,and I saw other kids with no shoes to wear. But I must say the worst moment of my young life was being forced to wear my elder brothers merchant navy issue white deck shoes to school, now you may think well that's not very difficult, well apart from being white they where a ( size ten ) now prior to that I had worn, and in my opinion what I thought where the ( dogs bollicks ) a pair of football boots with no studs I definitely thought they where way out there in fashion sense, and my brother forced me to wear these white size ten in the winter, I must point out that I was about seven or eight at the time and I was most likely a size five or something, what a cruel world it was
