An allotment . The skipper could refuse him a sub . When I was a deck boy I put in for a £5 sub in BA , the skipper asked why did I need so much money.

#2.... If that was in the middle fifties Louis, I can remember the Argentine having the hard currency times which seems to be a regular occurrence down there. The official rate of exchange being at one time 39.5 pesos or whatever they were, to the pound, if you had a pound note you could get 140 pesos for. Always used to try and arrive with sterling in BA and other places in the Argentine. Today that would be world wide news in our days was an accepted fact. The same as Cuba when Batiste was in they would not accept a Scottish pound note, thought it was a forgery. The old USA dollar was known world wide and still is to this day. Russia was the same you were better off with cash than accept the rate of exchange at ship. Cheers JWS
