Just renewed my car insurance yesterday, i always hunt round as the worst thing you can do is to just let your insurance company roll, they will shaft you every time. I don't know if this system i encountered this time is new, but having paid for the renewal, and answered all questions etc, noticed on my insurance document that further information was required, they required a photo copy of all the drivers licences, front and back, plus i had to go to the DVLA website, and acquire a code, that last for 21 days, so that the insurers could check our records for convictions etc. I know that the code from DVLA is required for car hire companies , thats assuming you are not over 70 years, in which case you may not be able to hire, or if you can, it will extra loading on age grounds. A right palaver if you do not have a computer for your car insurance, kt

...what company was that keith never heard of that before ...use the same company for me and pat ...they always try to roll over but i get back and always get a reduction from what they ask for ......cant complain at my prices cappy

Cappy, I used a broker Groves and Dean, and the Company is Covea, I got a reasonable rate as they throw in legal cover and roadside rescue, but I had never had to do that before. As far as car hire goes, at 77 years of age I cannot hire, or if there is a company it would be horrendously expensive. That has stuffed me for a holiday in Ireland, as I would have to take the car from here to the mainland ( mortgage required ) then ferry again to Ireland, so no go, kt

thats interesting keith i am also 77 next month but didnt know i could not hire then ...as for driving abroad there is no restriction on this for me but i do have also a top RAC cover on my vehicle and pat has it with the purchase of her vehicle....our insurances are certainly not penal .....we have max no claims which is a great boon ....but more officialdom as they require from you is suprising ......but it seems no one cares ..cappy

Keith maybe telling you how to suck eggs here but do you ever do an online search for discount ferry codes? I use them often and have on occassion got some good deals. Because I travel across to Calais /Dover a lot and always use P&O I have managed to get decent rates. I sign in to my account and see what they are offering me usually not to bad, I may find a code with a bit more off. I have though noticed that at times they tell me the code is not available. What they are doing is I am sure is noting my IP address so they know I will book anyway. A friend told me to book it through his computer and guess what the code is accepted. If possible I always use Irish ferries for the the leg over to Ireland and usually get a decent discount from them.

Lewis, I have only ever had one holiday to Ireland, never got there in my MN days, but had hoped to do the fly drive one, but to travel from the IOW means a night stay on the way out to IReland , and another on the way back, which is too much hassle. However maybe next year will take a coach trip to Ireland from the IOW, but thanks for the thought, kt

Further to my post on having to send photo copies of your driving licences when you purchase insurance online, plus the DVLA code. On searching online , this is becoming more widespread, Churchills search engine is one that uses this method. All these photo copies are stored by the insurance company, nice little earner for some unscrupulous employer to sell on to someone else !!!!, nice business in cloned driving licences it seems could happen, kt

Do that coach trip Keith you will love Ireland even in the rain. I still get over at least once a year from here and that is by motor bike. I have a lot of friends there and the roads are great as is the Craic. Last time I went was with Irish ferries going, lovely ship and like a mini cruise from Cherbourg to Roslare, Stena coming back , never again as the ferry was disgusting , dirty and stank to high heaven.

just as a matter of interest keith i have just recieved a renewal notice from my insurer for house insurance up 22 percent from last year ..i have been on the phone and they have supposedly discovered they did not give me my loyalty bonus....which has never been mentioned before ......after battling for some 6 minutes got it down to 2 percent......what a bloody set of con merchants

Cappy, this happened to me with Marks Spencer car insurance, i would phone up and say this insurance has gone up percent, and is not acceptable, they would say, just let me chaeck for you, ah yes as a loyal customer we can reduce that to xy, if i had been mug enough to just accept the renewal letter, they would have been laughing. They are all at it Cappy, they are trying to con us at every turn, kt
