Principles ( not morals )
How many can you remember....
Aneroid Barometer... Air has weight and exerts pressure.
Marine Barometer.. A column of mercury is balanced by a column of air extending from the top of the level in the cistern to the outer most limits of the earths atmosphere.
Patent sounding machine... Boyles law.. the volume of a fixed mass of gass various inversely with the pressure upon it when the temperature remains constant.
Sextant ..too long to print.
Hydrometer.. Archimedes law.
Hygrometer.. the difference between the dry and wet bulb thermometers in a Stevenson screen
Plenty more but as my memory is not so good, will leave JWS.

Some of those we learned at school in science classes but now only bother with the barometer. That and animals is a far more acurate indication of the weather to come than any weahter forecast.

#2... John a better way than the wet finger for finding the direction of a TRS ( Tropical Revolving Storm) was to stop the ship and put the bow directly into the wind. The centre of the storm was then estimated 2 points on your port bow in the southern hemisphere and vice. Versa in the northern hemisphere, the force of the wind and the Barometer pressure was up to you to estimate how far away. The original barometers were measured in inchs, then millibars, and today if haven't changed again hectopascales, don't ask me why, maybe some climate change expert might know. Cheers JWS.
