Cappy I have just come back from Liverpool after having a few pints with my son and his wife.They were drinking your drink Sol,Iasked where was the wedge of lime that is usually stuck in the neck of the bottle,they didn't want it as they were drinking from the bottle right away.I have often wondered why the wedge of lime is stuck in the neck as it is not squeezed into the bottle my son gave me the reason for the lime ( Idont know if it's right or wrong)maybe Cappy can give me his take on it.So Cappy as an expert on your little Sols what is this wedge of lime for.

####interesting query jim something i never take with my sols ....it seems to be the younger generation thing i also always have a glass to drink from...... i would think i was trying to be a young buck drinking straight from the bottle in the bar instead of an old count....think i spelled that right......but no doubt mother judge of pricks will give an answer when he has seen to his sheep .....best wishes cappy

There are hundered theories of what a lemon wedge does in the corona bottle - prominent ones being
a) Reverse the chemical change due to transparent bottle glass exposed to sunlight as opposed to tinted glass for others
b) Intention was to clear the rust at the mouth when there were metal caps.
c) Flies away from beer

But the real reason has nothing to do with any of these. Here is the real reason: Two bartenders had a bet around a lemon wedge floating or sinking in beer. They saw a bottle of corona at hand, tested it out... rest is history.

As an additive I used to always have a dash of Lime in my Castle Lager in South Africa ,it was very popular too!
Made the Beer have a wonderful flavour!

Young friends told me that it was girls who started putting the lime wedge in, as this prevented the 'rape date' tablets being put in their drink, whilst the drink was unattended (if they were dancing) and that's why they started drinking from bottles instead of glasses

Vernon the popular belief is that flies do not like the smell of lime so it keeps them away from landing on the neck of the bottle,the lime is removed in between swigs.
I read all the same as you and I don't believe the story about the barman,in my opinion it's to add the flavour of the lime to the drink,just like many people drink lager and lime.They say it could be a good marketing ploy.

Mexicans and Spanish, started the putting lime in there beer.The reason was to sterilizes the rim of the bottle or glass.

Lime Juice was a BOT requirement when I first went to sea and had been for years before that. It was supposed to be a replacement for Vitaman C with the lack of Fresh Vegetables. Due to the non refrigeration on a lot of ships then. In Australia Englishmen are Pommies, in America are Limeys. JWS

Did nothing for mine, unless I was a sex maniac before taking. If remember right used to mix with Brasso for cleaning purposes, and not for consumption. Used to be supplied to ship in demi-johns, maybe cheaper if bought in large amounts. If on the other hand were looking for an aphrodisiac and couldn't get your hands on Rhino horn, they reckoned oysters were a good substitute , have only seen oysters on one ship however and that was when I fed off the passengers menus on a Liberian vessel. The follow up to that was usually Lobster Thermadore, I used to stuff as many oysters down my neck as possible, but was never proved or not if the fallacy was true or not as to performance. Cheers JWS
