#142, Hi Terry, are you sure the Thomas Tank engine is for your grandson:) as my dad bought me a Loco and a couple
of goods waggons with a circle of track, this was for my tenth birthday 1949 and it was a Hornby 00 gauge. By 1950 my
two sisters had got married and being a large house we had rooms to spare, dad got hold of an old billiard table from
somewhere and he stripped it down cut it in half then rejoined it with a 4' gap in the middle, this was to be the base of
a railway layout that turned out to be a bit special. Dad turned the billiard table into a landscape with roads and a small
Hamlet with a pond the trees and hedgerows were made of wire wool dipped in glue then sprinkled with sawdust and
painted, even my brother in law, a policeman, became obsessed with it and they were always adding to the stock and
accessories. In 1955 when I went on the Vindi mum and dad moved to a smaller house just across the road, and the
billiard table had to go so the trains and accessories was boxed up and sadly never re assembled. Today I have the
engines, stock and track in cases in my attic, express engines with Pullman and ordinary carriages, Locomotives with
freight waggons all original late 40s-mid 50s Hornby 00 gauge made of diecast metal and tin, they are all collectors
pieces now, as todays stuff is all made of plastic, it's amazing really how things turn out. cheers JC
