I still have some of the old ones which I keep handy in case have to go back to UK in a hurry. Hope they still work. When you think back to the old White Fivers, sometimes had to put your name and address on the back in case they were forgeries. JS

The new five dollar note here is made from polimar, the same stuff your new note is made from. Never knew it was good to eat though, bit of tallow keeps the bowels open I believe.
But we were reliably informed, oh yes they told us, the new note would work any where that notes can be used in machines. One small problem, no one told the machines thy had to accept them, they will not work anywhere.
But have been reliably informed, this guy reliable does get around, that when the new ten comes out next year all will be good.

When you paid off with a hand full of those `white fivers` you felt like a millionaire ! Having said that I recall we called into Bermuda I went ashore with couple of those` tissue paper` like notes ,went to shout a few boys a beer at a local bar.....would not except them ,``we only take American currency here my man `` I was told ! DRY OLD NIGHT THAT ENDED UP TO BE !

Do others living in Oz have any trouble when drawing money from a bank, notice that the 100 dollars are not too easy to come by. I drew a sizeable amount out today and the same as in the past was all in 50 dollar notes, I didn't bother to ask, as knew if asked for hundreds they would have said they didn't carry too many of them and should put in an order beforehand. A hundred dollar note is not a lot of money when you consider sticky stuff for keeping your false teeth in your head is 15 dollars a tube. and would be nearly 100 dollars for 6 tubes, not that I need that much, but might be going bush for that length of time. Cappy just wouldn't bother putting his teeth in, but I wouldn't be able to eat my Weetabix without. Ref # 15 Brian when I worked for Saguenay terminals visited Bermuda every 6 weeks, and although was very British at the time, even had the old British bobby there, I was fortuanate enough to be paid in the yankee dollar. Never entered my mind you would of had trouble with sterling in a British protectorate, in Trinidad there were at that time 4.5 BWI dollars to the pound don't know how many to the US dollar., as just used to draw from the Radio Officer and at the end of every month were paid in US dollars in hand. BWI dollar= British West Indies. Just shows you learn something new all the time on here. The biggest trouble abroad with sterling was the Scottish pound note The linen Bank of Scotland, never did get full value for, even in England at one time only got 19/6d if you were lucky. A lot of the money changers wouldn't even look at it. Cheers JS

Apart from tooth gum, maybe a better way to describe the worth of a 100 dollar note would be about a dozen pints of beer in the average pub. Although keep out of the Pub with no beer. JS

I was in Dubai in 1978 and was with a Scottish Engineer, He changed Scottish Pound Notes and I changed English ones in to Derhams.
He got more money than I got, When I asked why, the Arabs said, because Scotland has North Sea Oil they were worth more than the English ones.

I had a big pile of Derhams recently from when I was there in the 70s, I was there again recently, bought a load of swag from the Duty Free Shop in Dubai, and at the till they said, they were worthless as they had changed the currency.

Going to London even in the 80's always changed Scottish notes to English. Using Ulster, same palaver

Marian, never had any problem, shops refused to take Scottish money, just threatened them to walk out and leave the goods, soon changed their minds.
Did in M&S in lamington, big que behind me girl said can't Scottish money, me you can keep the goods, supervisor changed her mind.
Lot of shuffling of feet in que he behind, didn't care.
