Remember this series is set way back in the 50's. At that time it was quite common for that to occur here in Oz. Fireworks were on sale to the public up to about 1980 when a young lad was killed by one and they were declared illegal, apart from Canberra that is.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

Hi John, wish they were illegal here, getting ridiculous these last few years, bonfire night Nov 5th or nearest weekend now goes on
for at least 3 weeks, they don't go bang anymore they go BANG, every time one goes off my mongrel tries to dig a basement under
the carpet, A & E departments end up being busy with burns especially youngsters who grab the red hot part of a sparkler as its
finishing, thatched cottages and houses are losing their roofs, farmers are losing their hay and straw stacks when rockets land on them.

The series on at the moment is in Ballarat in 1959, and full of the old cars, including ford Zodiacs and Zephers, I spent 10 years of MN
money on a Ford Consul in 1959 so brings back a bit of nostalgia.

The reason I was surprised is that I didn't expect you to celebrate something in Australia that happened here in 1605.

    Fred.

In Boltonistan Fire works are going off all the time.
Fireworks banging away at the end of Ram a dam, Fire works when eid starts, Fireworks when eid finishes, fireworks when a brit soldier is killed, fireworks at the weddings, Fireworks when a baby boy is born, fireworks at the Female Genital Mutilation ceremony, Fireworks at the circumcision ceremony, Fireworks at Diwali, Fireworks at Hindu weddings.

Some times I think the civil war has started here, I am getting shell shock, PTSD. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Just feel lucky you only get it once a year and be thankful

When I was in Port Alma, near Rockampton in Queensland in November 1956, The Wharfies and Canteen girls lived there in shacks for the duration of loading a cargo of beef.
They had a bonfire night and fireworks on the 5th of November. It is in the story of A voyage on the Dunedin Star.

I don't think we actually `Celebrate` it John, just go to church, all the shops and stores always closed. it is a bank holiday, BUT
now the shops and stores are all open, but that is why as they say we are now multicultural and it would Offend the mozzis if they couldn't go shopping on that day.

I went shopping last week on Black Friday , to Sainsburys, almost empty, as it is Friday Prayers at the mo sks, so most of the customers were away. I always go Friday.as it is quiet and very few of them around.
They had several stacks of TVs.
In total comfort I bought a 40inch HD BLAUPUNKT* TV. FOR £100.
. those films were in America.
They must live desperate lives over there. What a way to live. If they are not fighting each other the they are shooting each other.
I think we have a better way over here.
