Re: Prefabricated Homes.
I've got a book Doc, "The Sailing Ships of the NZSCo 1873-1900"
JC
You may just be my saviour here!
In that Book you hold is there a Ship (think it may have been a Clipper) called the City Of Edinburgh , it was 301 tonner and I think either bought or owned by GSNC. it was built IN 1820/21 s not sure if you would have of that date!
If there is any information on that Ship like exactly where she was built her Engine Type capacity and anything else I would really appreciate the info!
Many thanks in advance I await with baited breath! LOL
Cheers

Re: Prefabricated Homes.
#70 Thank you for that Doc it is very informative, I can never understand how these people can take over a country and enforce their will on people, I know very little about it other than what I saw and what you've told me. I do remember when Verwoerd was shot but survived about 1960 and then later assassinated I also know he was a very hated man and people were glad to see him dead
my first experience of apartheid was when we walked into a small bar that was empty except for the barman who was black, he was very nervous and said please leave, the white mans bar is further down the street, we were shocked. I also remember they had a really modern shopping centre with escalators in a very big building we were all impressed with that, and a drink called anisette or
something like that that was pretty powerful. I know that when you joined the MN you must have seen many races mixing freely on
the ships and on your travels, I can only wonder at the thoughts you had about what had happened in your own country, it's a very sad story and it's another reason to be glad of the freedom we have. cheers, JC.

Re: Prefabricated Homes.
In 1976 we were in Cape Town for three months having repairs.
One of our Liverpool Firemen ,from Liverpool, `Chalkie ` Jones, was a very black man but a real Scouse around 25 years old..
He was not happy at the thought of being there, He had words with the Captain and he got the Immigration and the British Consul down and discussed the situation, Chalkie was given a Special Pass, he was an Honary Whiteman for the duration,
and did he make use of it, He had more women than anyone. in the Bar on the top floor of the 400 foot high Heerengraght *
Hotel the women were nearly fighting over him, we didn't have a chance, He was good looking tho`.
Cheers
Brian.

Re: Prefabricated Homes.
#71 Sorry to disappoint Doc that info doesn't match my book at all as it is all NZSCo history and as far as I've seen their ships were all built specifically for the company when they first started. I did have a look on line but no joy there I wonder if your info is
correct I'll keep it in mind though and you never know what might turn up. cheers, JC

Re: Prefabricated Homes.
Having seen some of the things that happened there I can fully understand how Doc feels about his home town.
When we left UK we did so knowing that Oz was a good place to go the wife had family here so that made it easier. Have been back to k few times and looking at how it Is now I know did he right thing. At times I mourn the way the country inns now as I recall as young lad how it was then. London now is no longer the London I grew up in. Yes places change w know that, but this is not change for the better.

Happy daze John in Oz.
Life is too short to blend in.

Re: Prefabricated Homes.
#64...JC it was a mob related protection racket Cappy was involved with at North Shields fish quay. The fisher girls down from Aberdeen sent him packing, that's where he absconded with Mary and lived off her immoral earnings for a few years before he found fame and fortune on the good ship Avonmoor, the incoming Chinese crew had to hacksaw the chains he had tied himself to attached to the galley stove. Mary tried beating them off with her wooden crutch, but she was well outnumbered. Cheers JS

Re: Prefabricated Homes.
John, ref 76, is you judge England by how things are in London you will always get the wrong impression, London has always been a different country to the rest of UK, move out to the Real rural areas and still old country pubs are there. That English pub will never change, and no where in the world like it, KT

Re: Prefabricated Homes.
#78... Keith don't know about your rural areas, but the council estate that I spent the few teen years of my life with my parents, they had a residents club on the estate just like a Working Mans Club was even affiliated. The last time over 2 years ago is now a temporary mosque until they build a proper one. That's real progress that is. The whole estate apart from a few of the old die-hards now walk around wrapped in sheets and balaclavas. Never seen anything more depressing. The people in power who opened the floodgates to the UK and we all know who they were, should receive a public reprimand like the ones who now make claim to the land would receive in their own lands, only larger stones should be used I would suggest building bricks. There is nothing more rural than Northumberland and they already have more than a toehold there. Cheers JS PS I am just waiting with bated breath to see if the British people have any of the fire they used to have when it is announced that Bliar and Broon receive their knighthoods for services to the country, think it will all go through without a word of opposition. JS
