#57 Your not wrong there cappy, I was talking to some lads who were on a shift a few years ago and they told me that nowadays it is a three way shift so the money isn't there anymore, I've also been out on cable breakdowns on Coaxial Junction cables that can
carry 27000 conversations at once, and it's all unscrambled at small exchanges enroute, I have been called out a few times and worked for over 36 hours to get it done as they are very important cables and got paid what they called protracted duty, that was worth doing. cheers, JC

Re: Prefabricated Homes.
I'm with you there mate as it's all in your own pocket and that makes a lot of sense, but it just never appealed to me to run my own business. I read your post about buying herrings cheap and selling them on. Very enterprising for a kid.
cheers JC

Re: Prefabricated Homes.
#49 I've got a book Doc, "The Sailing Ships of the NZSCo 1873-1900" . I n January 1873 as soon as the company was registered they sent an agent to England to "tender for the carriage of emigrants at £15 per head and with discretion down to £14-5s-0d. I just thought this is a bit of interesting trivia that connects to the £10 pom post. When I went to Cape town about 1958, when apartheid was in in full swing I saw three men wearing (I think) khaki shirts, shorts & pith helmets, they were laying into a black man with truncheons they beat him to the ground and carried on relentlessly, and it reminded me of the Nazis treatment of the Jews it was a terrible thing to see. There was also a story of a British MN seaman who was caught with a black woman and he was horse whipped
as a punishment. It was an awful era for SA. I can remember seeing about 30 black workers coming from the docks in a column going home as if they were doing a tribal dance and they were all chanting, and this was all in the middle of the main drag it was a "amazing sight". cheers, JC.

Re: Prefabricated Homes.
I also was in Capetown in the same year, 1958, and you are quite right about the treatment of coloured at that time, if my memory is not completely knackered, i seem to recall that the japanese had just done a trade deal with SA, and they had previously been classified coloured, and so they classified them as white. We were warned by the shipping line that if we fraternised with black girls, it would be hard labour, and they could do nothing for us. I fairly recently spent 14 days in Capetown, its now a lovely atmosphere, and muc much better, KT

#65 Did you know that is fraudulent cappy, I wonder how many of them didn't wash their hands for a week and hung on to the thought.
cheers, JC.

Re: Prefabricated Homes.
Yes indeed JC
Some of those Years when we still lived there it was a terrible sight to behold at times!
It was very difficult too for the ones like our Family for example to even try and say anything against that regime,as it meant either imprisonment for severe cases or a bleedin good bashing for us too! And we were White!
I can tell you in all honestly that I had a few Girfriends that were Coloured at that time.amd we had to be so careful .when going out somewhere I would sit at the bottom of a Double Decker Bus with the Girl at the Top.
We got off at stops away from each other, then slyly met up somewhere pre arranged!
Gosh it was awful.
I myself have had a few times that I have been thrown in the back of the Black Maria Vans, and I say throw caus that's exactly what they do!
Two Boere take you one on each side bodily lift you and heave ho! in you go head first
its bleedin sore too! Not to mention what happened when you got to the Station!
As I have said before on here I love my Country of Birth and it is such a pity that even though its a lot better these days ,still not the place for me to live anymore!
Holidays are fine to see my dear Sister and my other Family links I have there!
We got out because of that very situation as at that time my present wife although classified with a White ID Card, came from a Coloured Family background!
All very complicated indeed!
Some of the Family had White ID and others had Coloured ID don't ask me as to how my dear departed Father In Law and Mother In Law ever managed to get married, but they did!
Its still to this day a mystery to me!
We had some very very hard times I can tell you,but managed to get through it all!
Now the shoe is on the other foot and many Whites are being persecuted by the Blacks there!
Can we blame them! Indeed not! So many Years they had to endure those despicable situations!
But all that said things are coming right slowly but surely!
Cape Town is still the pick for me!!!
Cheers
